History

Petrusite was an element that was a potent source of energy that was native to the planet Helghan. It was accidentally discovered during routine desert mining operations in the early 2350s, a period when the planet Helghan was undergoing rapid industrialization. The element, previously unknown, possessed immense electrical potential. It was first identified and studied by Professor Torr Savic, a leading researcher at the Institute of Science and Technology, who successfully developed a controlled method for using the substance to generate power. This breakthrough led to the development of 'arc technology', which provided cheap and abundant energy for the Helghast population and increased automation across their industries, effectively lifting the Helghan Empire out of a significant economic depression. The primary source for the raw petrusite was naturally occurring 'smoker towers', which were large, spire-shaped formations created by gases emitted from hydrothermal vents. Initially, extracting the raw material from these towers was hazardous manual labor. Helghast scientists soon innovated the process, developing a safer method using electrically charged plates to extract the petrusite from the escaping gases. Modified drones were then deployed to convey these charged plates to refineries for processing, allowing the Helghast to industrialize the harvesting of their most valuable natural resource. While its initial use was purely civil and industrial, under Autarch Scolar Visari's reign, the focus shifted dramatically, and the resource was heavily funneled into the Helghast military-industrial complex to build a massive war machine.

Overview

In appearance, Petrusite was a powerful, naturally occurring element native only to the planet Helghan, usually found in large subterranean deposits or emerging from hydrothermal vents in the form of towering spires known as 'smoker towers'. Its natural, raw form was a vibrant, deep blue crystalline substance. When seen in industrial settings or as a power source in devices like the petrusite capacitor, it was contained within transparent tubing or canisters, where its deep blue glow indicated a charged state.

A far more volatile variant, irradiated petrusite, was created when the substance was exposed to high levels of radiation, such as after the detonation of a nuclear device over the capital city of Pyrrhus. This irradiated form visually differed, appearing with a dangerous, intense green glow or flare. The material was used as a primary energy source for the Helghast, powering everything from city grids to weapons and vehicles, due to its unique property of condensing high-voltage electrical force from the air.

The Interplanetary Systems Alliance made use of Petrusite Capacitors in their cruisers as a power source with these being removable.
