Biography
Piter DeVries was a twisted Mentat advisor to the Harkonnen, Baron Vladimir,
De Vries discovered the Harkonnen heritage of Lady Jessica and her newborn son Paul, and attempted to kidnap and ransom the infant. The plot is thwarted and the secret preserved—the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam kills the Mentat and arranges for his corpse to be shipped home to Giedi Prime. An enraged Baron is left with no choice but to order a duplicate from the Bene Tleila.
He pioneered a type of toxin called 'residual poison' which remained in the body for years and required an antidote to be administered regularly. One such fatal poison was secretly administered by the Harkonnens to Thufir Hawat who was the Mentat of House Atreides. This was in order to guarantee Hawat's allegiance to the Harkonnens, who alone possessed the antidote.
Piter De Vries stood within the dim, spice-scented halls of a planetary stronghold, attending to his master as they discussed the imminent downfall of a rival noble family. He spoke with a high-pitched, musical voice, frequently interrupting the conversation to offer cold, calculated assessments of the political trap they had laid. During this encounter, he demonstrated his ability to process vast amounts of data by explaining the intricate web of betrayal they had woven, specifically detailing how a high-ranking traitor would deliver their enemies into their hands. He displayed a chilling lack of empathy, openly mocking the doomed family's virtues and anticipating the suffering of a young heir with visible relish. When his master questioned the cost of their ambitions, he provided a precise financial and political breakdown of the operation, proving his value as a living computer. He also indulged in his own addictions during the briefing, consuming substances that stained his features while he maintained a subservient yet arrogant posture. Before the meeting concluded, he reminded his superior of the specific rewards he had been promised for his role in the conspiracy, showing that his loyalty was driven entirely by personal greed and dark desires.
De Vries was the architect of the plan to destroy House Atreides, longtime enemy of the Harkonnens, while restoring the Baron's stewardship over the planet Arrakis. The devious and cunning de Vries was responsible for discovering how to break the Imperial Conditioning of a Suk doctor. He discovered that if he held a loved one of the Suk doctors to ransom, he could control their behaviour any way he wished. He forced the betrayal of House Atreides by Dr. Wellington Yueh. De Vries had kidnapped Yueh's wife, murdered her, and convinced Yueh that she was still alive. De Vries had promised that he would return his wife to him if he were to do the Harkonnens' bidding. The breaking of Yueh's Imperial Conditioning was part of a long-term plot to murder Duke Leto Atreides.
Piter De Vries planned the assault on Arrakis and House Atreides. The plan ended up being a success, but Piter did not live long enough to see this. Shortly after the fall of Arrakeen, he died when he got a faceful of poison gas, courtesy of Atreides, Duke Leto. De Vries was killed by Duke Leto when he mistakenly perceived de Vries to be the Baron Harkonnen. In a drugged state, Leto bit down on a poison gas tooth imbedded in his head by Yueh just before Leto was captured during the invasion of Arrakis. The Baron narrowly escaped, but de Vries was killed. In this way, Yueh managed to exact vengeance on the man that killed his wife.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Piter De Vries was a human male with an effeminate, slender face and eyes that possessed the deep, dark blue-within-blue staining of a heavy spice addict. He was a man of small, slight stature with a delicate body shape that moved with a graceful, almost feline precision. He possessed thin, pale lips that were permanently stained a deep ruby-red from his constant consumption of sapho juice, which added to his unsettling and predatory expression. He wore the fine, dark garments of a high-ranking servant within a Great House, typically consisting of a well-tailored tunic and trousers made of rich, somber fabrics that reflected the gloomy atmosphere of his master's sun-starved home world. His overall look was one of pampered, intellectual decadence, suggesting a man who shunned physical labor in favour of the mental exercises required of a living computer. This polished but sickly appearance served as a constant reminder of his unnatural origin and the chemical dependencies that fueled his superior cognitive abilities.
He demonstrated a great loyalty to Harkonnen that he continued to serve the Baron with great enthusiasm even though his Mentat abilities and great intelligence confirmed his suspicions that his master plans to eventually kill him.
Powers and abilities
De Vries was a Mentat that were humans specially trained to perform mental functions rivalling computer and came into dominance after the Butlerian Jihad. In Piter's case though, he was a Twisted Mentat that turned him into an amoral sadist with these being creations of the Bene Tleilaxu.
In his actions, Piter De Vries demonstrated no supernatural or physical powers, instead exhibiting a mastery over hyper-advanced logic, political simulation, and the cold calculation of a living computer. He proved to be a highly effective and indispensable strategist, having successfully coordinated a multi-planetary conspiracy that involved the subversion of ancient loyalties and the deployment of massive military resources. His primary feat was his ability to process vast quantities of data to predict human behavior, allowing him to anticipate the exact movements of his enemies and ensure their total entrapment. He showed a remarkable talent for psychological assessment, identifying the specific moral failings of his targets and articulating the precise price of their betrayal. Furthermore, he displayed a cynical but accurate understanding of imperial economics, positioning himself as a vital advisor capable of managing the immense costs of a galactic-scale assassination while maintaining his own chemical dependencies and dark personal ambitions.
He pioneered a type of toxin called 'residual poison' which remained in the body for years and required an antidote to be administered regularly.
Such was his devious nature that he discovered a means to break the Imperial Conditioning of a Suk doctor. He believed that if he held a loved one of the Suk doctors to ransom, he could control their behaviour any way he wished.
He was attached to House Harkonnen where his seniority allowed him to command many of its assets as he served as advisor to the family's head.
