Plattnerite (The Time Ships)
Plattnerite is a greenish substance that can be synthesized from carolinum after intense radioactive bombardment. Plattnerite was named for Gottfried Plattner, the mysterious figure who gave the first known sample to the Time Traveller. The Kurt Godel of an alternate timeline also learned how to create the substance, as did the Universal Constructors of yet another. However, it may have first been discovered by the far-future Watchers.
Plattnerite has strange temporal properties- for example, light passing through a sheet of the substance undergoes a "temporal distortion." It was Plattnerite, interlaced with quartz crystals and brass, that made the Time Traveller's Time Machine possible. However, the substance has a limited usage for time travel, and the amount used in the typical time machine burns out after travelling some 50 million years.
