History

Origin

Pokolistan was a country situated in Europe. It was described as being a dwarf in the former Czech Republic whose name had been lost to brutal history. (Action Comics v1 #779) Originally, it was a simply bantam European nation that was nearly lost to history but in the span of months became the fastest growing country in history. (Action Comics v1 #789)

Afterwards, a rise in the number of Metahumans emerged in the United States after a Meta-Virus was released. This caused those infected to have their Metagene to be activated resulting in chaos as thousands developed powers that needed to be contained. It was determined that the virus was a biological attack from the nation of Bialya and General Zod alongside his Pokolistan allies struck at the country with the forces of General Rajak being slaughtered. The military ruler was taken by Zod to America and given as a war criminal to President Luthor. (Action Comics v1 #802)

Even without General Zod, Pokolistan's army posed a significant threat to the world. In reality, Superman was actually Zod who had made himself resemble the Man of Steel in order to infiltrate President Luthors command center. Once there, he took control of the facility and activated his sleepers to conquer the United State's key sites. As part of his scheme, General Zod had disguised himself to resemble Superman and made the world believe that Zod had died in an effort to change the sun. This was so that he could gain the confidence of President Luthor and enter his headquarters at the Rabbit Hole safe house. Once there, he dispensed with the staff and took command of the site whereupon he unleashed the Pokolistan army’s sleeper cells to infiltrate key sites in order to take over the world. (Action Comics v1 #803)

With the death of Zod, the military of Pokolistan surrendered whilst a handful clung to power. Its status as a country seemed dim with the United Nation's looking into conducting resolutions to return stolen territory that was taken during the Imperiex War. Top officials in the army returned his body to the capital and buried him with full regalia. (Action Comics v1 #805) International reconstruction efforts were made to help rebuild the nation and remove any lingering dangerous items left behind. (JLA v1 #107)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Lord Havok after arriving on Earth took over the country of Kravia and began approaching the neighbouring nations to bring them under his control with Pokolistan being one of those nations. (Justice League of America v5 #3)

Film

  • In Superman vs. The Elite, the animated film features Pokolistan that was involved in rising tensions with Bialya after the peace treaty between the two countries ended. Pokolistan deployed a bio-weapon against Bialya that was stopped by Superman with the aid of the newly emerged Elite. Afterwards, Kal-El returned to Bialya as he sought more information on the Elite when the country was hit by a EMP bomb generated by Coldcast to stop the combating forces. The detonation of the EMP knocked out Superman where Pokolistani armed forces attempted to kill him but were themselves brutally killed by the Elite. In retaliation, the Bialyan airforce sent fighter jets into Pokolistan but these were all disabled by Superman in an effort to prove that conflict could be ended without killing. However, the Elite had already killed the leaders of both Bialya and Pokolistan.
