History

The Purifiers were a race of sentient machines that were created by the Protoss. They were built under the direct orders of the Conclave who desired the creation of the ultimate fighting force. This was during a time when Protoss scientists were making great strides in the advancements in intelligent robotics and artificial intelligences. Initially, this program was kept in secret with the program looking into turning consciousness into data allowing the thought processes and decision making ability of a former living being to be preserved. Studies had shown that these thought replications were often 99.3% accurate to the Protoss subject who was patterned in the replication. With these developments, the Conclave moved to use this technology to build a force that consisted of replicated patterns of the greatest warriors in Protoss history. These Purifiers were, however, not afforded the same level of respect as regular members of the Templar Caste and were treated little better than slaves in the eyes of the Conclave. Thus, in time, the Purifiers chose to rebel and turned against their masters where they killed numerous Protoss. In response, the Conclave determined that the robotic Purifiers were too dangerous to be allowed to exist and decided to ban their use. This saw the machines being powered down and launched aboard a command vessel known as the Cybros that was left around an isolated world. A standing order was that the Purifiers were only to be reactivated in the most direst of circumstances.

Overview

In appearance, the Purifiers originally resembled that of the organic Protoss.

The mental patterns of the Purifiers was based on that of living Protoss who had their minds cloned and recreated into the artificial intelligence matrix of the machine. The memory web of the Purifiers was said to be based on the Khala and thus linked them all together. One aspect of their nature was that Purifier units operated better when grouped near one another.

There were various types of Purifiers that included:

  • Disruptor :
  • Energizer :
  • Sentinel :
  • Colossus :
  • Mirage :
  • Instigator :
  • Adept :
  • Tempest :

Notes

  • Originally, the Purifiers were the name of a type of Protoss unit that was later cancelled.
  • In Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, a Protoss Mothership purging a Zerg infestation was named the Purifier but seemingly had no connection to the robotic Purifiers.
