History

The Quarians were a humanoid race of beings that were native to the planet Rannoch that was located in the Milky Way Galaxy. It was known that thousands of years ago that they were a beautiful race with the Protheans considering them attractive in that cycle.

Approximately three hundred years ago the quarians created the geth, a species of rudimentary AIs, to serve as an efficient source of manual labor. However, when the geth began to ask certain existential questions, thus displaying the first signs of self-awareness, the quarians panicked, and broadcast a shutdown signal to all the geth. Unfortunately, the geth rebelled against their quarian masters and drove them into exile. Now the quarians wander the galaxy in a flotilla of salvaged ships, secondhand vessels, and recycled technology. Other species tend to look down on the quarians, seeing them as scavengers and condemning them for unleashing a dangerous synthetic life form on the rest of the galaxy.

Overview

Quarians are generally shorter and of slighter build than humans. Their hands consist of a thumb and only two fingers, while their feet have only two large, prominent toes. They dress in a scavenged assortment of materials, hiding their faces behind visors, goggles, or breathing masks. Possessing no natural world to call home, quarians live aboard sterile starships, having virtually no natural immune system as a result.

A central piece in the Quarian Flotilla were the Liveships that possessed wide open-spaces with them being fitted with massive hydroponic facilities allowing them to grow thousands of tonnes of genetically modified staple crop that were fed under artificial light along with highly enriched soil. These vessels surfaces were filled with docking bays to accommodate as many shuttles as possible in order to distribute food throughout the flotilla on a daily routine. Upon being received, the crops were sterilised with radiation and ground up into nutrious paste that was pumped into feeding tubes in Quarian suits. Waste products were used as fertiliser or compost that was returned to the Liveships by an efficient recycling process. Though large, this type of spacecraft did not hold any animals thus necessitating the Quarians to having a vegan diet with this being driven to by practicality rather than any code of ethics. This was because animals required living space and consumed large quantities of water as well as plant matter which the Quarians could not afford to maintain. Thus, worlds that contained animals with dextro-amino acids that were on the path of the flotilla often had the food being sold at highly inflated prices due to the rarity of the food as vendors were overwhelmed by costumers looking to try new food sensations.
