Biography
Raizo Kodo was a Japanese man born in medieval Japan where he came to find his clan threatened by the vampire warlord Jakkaru who was a mysteriously powerful conqueror who had legions of men at his command, held in sway mostly by fear. Journeying to Jakkaru's encampment with his brother Ryuhei in the guise of simple peasants, the duo was able to infiltrate his camp, killing his guards and confronting Jakkaru. Enraged, Jakkaru attacked the pair, holding his own before being stabbed through the heart by Ryuhei. Thinking him dead, Ryuhei approached the body hoping to find a personal treasure of Jakkaru's he could show his father, but quickly found that Jakkaru wasn't dead. As Jakkaru sunk his fangs into Ryuhei, Raizo grabbed the first thing he could find, a wooden training sword, and stabbed Jakkaru again, then beheaded the vampire, seemingly killing him. Escaping with his injured brother, the two fled to their clan's home. At home, the Lord Kodo's attendants attempted to warn him of the evil that lurked within Ryuhei, speculating that a demon had possessed Jakkaru and now resided in Ryuhei. Warning his father that maybe the attendant was right, Raizo's father ignored him, thinking Ryuhei just needed rest. Over the next few days, Ryuhei's behavior changed, as he spent nights carousing with women in the neighboring village. Confronting Ryuhei over this behavior, Raizo found his brother belligerent and angry that his brother seemingly didn't respect him. Feeling the need to do something to help his brother, Raizo met with Suzume, unofficially his fiance, who told him that if a problem existed, he needed to solve it. Determined to solve the mystery of his brother's odd behavior, he set to find the answers at Jakkaru's fortress. There, he found the former servants of Jakkaru, enraged at his presence, and swiftly dispatched them. Questioning their commander, Raizo was told the story of Jakkaru, who, after meeting with a Dutchman who promised him power and eternal life, found himself changed, and began carrying out 'acts of unspeakable depravity'. Leaving Jakkaru's castle, Raizo returned home, stopping along the way to outfit himself for battle. Entering his home, he confronted his father, a newly-turned vampire. Slaying the old man and his mother, he then set fire to his home. When Suzume approached him, he attempted to convince her to leave with him, not realizing that Suzume had already been transformed. Bitten by Suzume, he found he had no choice, and was forced to kill her. Killing the other transformed residents of the Kodo clan, he eventually confronted Ryuhei who sat calmly in anticipation of the battle. Offering Raizo a chance to join the clan as it gained power, Raizo told his brother he would never choose that path, then battled his brother, eventually being disarmed and held at the point of a sword by Ryuhei. At that point, a piece of the burning roof fell onto Ryuhei, separating the two and setting Ryuhei on fire. Seeing his chance, Raizo beheaded his brother and fled the fire. Stopping at a nearby tree, Raizo knew, due to Suzume's bite, he would soon find himself corrupted as his family had become. Holding a wooden sword to his gut, he prepared to kill himself but found himself too weak to do so. And as the change took effect, he found he liked who he had become. Raizo Kodo led the Forgiven into the ruins of a Romanian village to intercept the Nul-transformed Hulk, who was rampaging through Dracula’s territory. He coordinated a strategic strike against the behemoth, utilizing a specialized chain to ensnare the creature’s limbs and momentarily halt its advance. When the Hulk broke free and retaliated with overwhelming force, Raizo stood his ground and used his superior speed to dodge a series of devastating ground-pounds while redirecting his team to maintain their formation. He transitioned from long-range harassment to close-quarters combat, wielding his blade to deflect debris and strike at the creature’s pressure points in an attempt to slow its regeneration. Despite the Hulk’s increasing rage, he maintained a calm tactical focus, eventually ordering a tactical withdrawal when the physical toll on his team became too great. He concluded the engagement by facilitating an parley with Dracula’s forces, providing them with the intelligence gathered during the skirmish to better prepare for the next phase of the defense. (Fear Itself: Hulk vs. Dracula v1 #1) Raizo Kodo led the Forgiven into the heart of the battle at the gates of Dracula’s Castle to hold the line against the unstoppable Nul. He coordinated a multi-directional assault, using his team's unique vampiric abilities to distract the behemoth while he personally engaged in high-speed sword strikes against the creature's armored hide. When the Hulk’s hammer, the World-Breaker, sent shockwaves through the courtyard, Raizo utilized his agility to stay upright and redirected his warriors to protect the wounded. He eventually transitioned the offensive into a stalling tactic, sacrificing his own physical safety to lead the Hulk away from the castle's primary structural supports. Throughout the meat-grinder of a confrontation, he maintained his vow of non-lethal discipline toward humans and focused solely on the supernatural threat, even as the castle walls began to crumble around him. He concluded the skirmish by observing the Hulk's departure from a vantage point, immediately pivoting to treat his fallen comrades and prepare for the next wave of the God of Fear's invasion. Kodo coordinated the Forgiven in a high-stakes defensive perimeter around the final inner sanctum of Dracula’s castle to repel the encroaching Nul. He intercepted several devastating blows from the hammer-wielding behemoth, using his reinforced blade to parry strikes that would have crushed a lesser combatant. When the Hulk’s rage peaked, he executed a series of rapid, distracting slashes across the creature's eyes to buy time for the vampire legions to regroup. He maintained a strict tactical focus, refusing to give in to his bloodlust even as the chaos of the battle intensified and his fellow warriors fell around him. After the Hulk was eventually lured away from the stronghold through a combined magical and physical effort, he gathered the surviving members of his team to assess their heavy losses. He finished the engagement by stoically overseeing the recovery of the Forgiven's wounded, prioritizing their survival over the celebration of the hard-won defense. He came to learn that the Red Hulk was heading towards the pool of penance where along with the other Forgiven were cleansed of their sins. After learning from a Moksha Sect seer, they went forth to confront the gamma-powered monster and to stop him as they believed he would destroy the site. However, he came to learn that the Red Hulk had gone into the waters to cleanse himself from a force that was haunting him. Kodo then apologised for their transgression and offered the aid of the Forgiven should he ever need them. (Hulk v2 #51)
