Ratcatcher is a male comic supervillain who features in DC Comics.

Biography

Origin

Otis Flannegan

He used to work as a rat-catcher in the Gotham City Sanitation Department and always claimed he could train rats to attack. Flannegan was eventually arrested and spent ten years in prison after stabbing a man to death in a street fight. After his release from the Gotham State Penitentiary, Flannegan kidnapped the four officials responsible for his arrest and subsequent sentence. He took his prisoners to a hideout located in the city's sewers, where he kept them for five years. During this period, Flannegan developed his current criminal alter-ego as Ratcatcher. Wearing protective equipment and using his animal training skills, Ratcatcher gathered a large mischief of rats which he used to torture and restrain his prisoners. (Detective Comics v1 #585)

Powers and abilities

With a whistle, he was able to control swarms of rats that he could direct to attack his targets. It was said that they clung to him as if they were family pets. When attacking, they were able to rip through flesh and kill a person by tearing through the jugular where in large numbers they were able to kill an adult man. They were capable of protecting him from harm such as jumping in the path of projectiles that were thrown at the Ratcatcher. (Detective Comics v1 #585)

He operated underground and in the sewers of the Gotham City that he considered to be his domain. (Detective Comics v1 #585)

  • Ratcatcher was created by Alan Grant, John Wagner and Norm Breyfogle where he made his first appearance in Detective Comics v1 #585 (April, 1988).

Television

  • In Harley Quinn, the Ratcatcher appeared in the setting of the animated television series in the episode "There's Nowhere to Go But Down" where he was voiced by actor James Adomian.

Films

  • In The Suicide Squad, the Ratcatcher appeared in the setting of the 2021 live-action film where he was portrayed by actor Taika Waititi. This version was a Portuguese man who had control over rats that he used to perform various thefts. He also had a daughter named Cleo Cazo who was portrayed by actress Daniela Melchior where he created a device that would allow her to control rats as well. It was shown in flashbacks that he would die from a drug overdose with his daughter becoming the new Ratcatcher where she illegally immigrated to the United States only to be arrested by the authorities. She was shipped to Belle Reve where Amanda Waller inducted her into Task Force X where she would conduct missions that would reduce her sentence.

Video games

  • In Batman: Dark Tomorrow, the Ratcatcher appeared as a boss level antagonist in the setting of the video game where he was voiced by actor Jonathan Roumie.
