Biography

Reader

He next travelled to China where he followed the Terrigen Cloud to find more newly activated Inhumans. Within an isolated village, he came to find the Chinese military looking to kill a newly empowered pressure manipulator who incidentally used her powers. Reader used his powers to freeze time in the area where he met Xiaoyi where he offered to take her to safety. She came to accompany him as they left the area where the time freezing effect eventually was removed after some time had passed. (Inhuman v1 #4) With her by his side, he made the long trek through various countries without a passport as they headed to the Inhuman tribe of Ennilux. The pair were ambushed by a group of mercenaries in Turkey but their opponents were defeated. Reader then took Xiaoyi to the Ennilux branch in Venice, Italy where he claimed that it was a safe haven for her. (Inhuman v1 #9)

Whilst reading Murdock's files, Reader grew tired and fell asleep during a section that spoke of Matt crafting an alternate persona of an identical twin brother called Mike Murdock. By this point, the Reader's powers had been restored and the read manifested in making Mike Murdock a reality. Thus, the alternate persona became a living breathing being with his own consciousness and mind based on the writings in the read. Mike Murdock came to believe he was Matt Murdock's twin brother and that his sibling was a close friend of Daredevil. Daredevil took Mike to the Inhumans where he eventually came to Reader who revealed that Mike was a 'fragment' of an incomplete read. He was prepared to erase Mike but he managed to escape and took Reader's dog Forey hostage before departing the scene. (Daredevil v1 #607)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Reader was a male with white skin where he had a visor around his eyes that marked the fact that he was blind. (Inhuman v1 #4)

The one companion that was by his side constantly was his dog Forey. (Inhuman v1 #4) He had said that Forey was his seeing-eye dog and that he was blind without him. (Inhuman v1 #9)

Powers and abilities

He was capable of 'borrowing' the senses of another where typically he did this to Forey so that he could briefly see his surroundings. (Inhuman v1 #4)

It was shown that his powers allowed him to freeze time over a localised area except for certain people though this effect was only temporary. (Inhuman v1 #4)

Through a reading, he could even manifest duplicates of people which Reader called fragments. These were unfinished thoughts and empty paragraphs given form through a read. He kept a tab by his side to unwrite such creations thus causing them to vanish. (Daredevil v1 #607)

In his hands, he wielded a metallic staff that he could use in hand-to-hand fighting. (Inhuman v1 #9)

Notes

  • Reader was created by Charles Soule and Ryan Stegman where he made his first appearance in Inhuman v1 #4 (October, 2014).
  • Charles Soule commented on his backstory on CBR, "Reader — love that guy. He’s an Inhuman, but he’s been around for a little while. He’s sort of my Mad Max character. He wanders the world getting into adventures. He’s also blind, and that ties into his power set in a neat way. Anything he reads becomes real, but his Inhuman community freaked out when he was a kid and put his eyes out, not wanting to deal with it. So he’s learned to manifest his powers through Braille. He has a ring of little tin sheets on his belt, each stamped with a different word. When he “reads” one — boom. Or whoosh. Or kzzak, depending on the word he chooses. He also has a great seeing-eye dog named Forey, which is short for Four-Eyes, the reason for which becomes apparent in the issue."
