Biography

Gabriel Reyes was a male human born in Los Angeles where he grew to adulthood when he came to serve as a police officer. In that time, he held the belief that the only way to truly deal with injustices was that it's root cause had to be ripped out at the source. He arrested hundreds of felons, but this did nothing to reduce the crime rate. He later joined the United States military, where he achieved a senior officer position. He achieved veteran status, and was highly respected. These years saw him helping topple a number of authoritarian regimes, but he came to watch in dismay as megacorporations took control and repeated the same abuses under the auspices of maximizing profits. Time and again, Reyes watched as the innocent suffered, while the elites escaped prosecution. He also took part in numerous extraction missions where he was often tasked with simply extracting the target, and handing said target off to another party. In some cases, this left certain people to a fate that he said were 'too ghastly to recall'. By this point, Reyes had yearned for a place in the government's coveted, classified and controversial 'soldier enhancement program'. Military scientists helped shape Reyes and other inductees into the perfect soldiers, blessed with superhuman speed, strength, and agility where he came to be known as Soldier: 24. Among his fellow candidates was Jack Morrison who came to be referred to as Soldier: 76.

Eventually, the tests ended, and Reyes and Morrison emerged as super-soldiers, along with the minority of other candidates who'd survived the process. They left the Wheeler Facility 24 hours before being cleared for release, eager as they were to rejoin the fight. Technically, this meant they were already in the field before they were announced to the world. Reyes's first recorded action as a SEP member was the Battle of Echo Park, where he saved thousands of lives and drove the invading omnics back to Glendale. While in the SEP, Reyes tended to take on smaller, less flashy missions. However, he was still integral to the Program's public success. He enjoyed challenges that relied on stealth and intelligence, given his police background. As governments tried and failed to neutralize the omnics, the United Nations was busy forming an international task force called Overwatch. Reyes and Morrison were both on the shortlist of prospective members. While Reyes was not the first person to be approached to lead its strike team, he was the first person to accept, thus becoming the first person to be recruited into Overwatch officially, and ultimately, its first strike commander. Reyes accepted, but was uneasy with the role. As a man who had always preferred to operate behind the scenes, he was ill-at-ease with the global attention. Morrison, who was recruited as Overwatch's second member, would have a greater impact on the group in the long term. He brought out the best in the people around him and helped mold Overwatch's diverse agents into a cohesive fighting force. Alongside Morrison and Ana Amari, Reyes took part in an operation at Rio de Janeiro. By this stage, the burden of leadership was beginning to get to him. In unity, they found the strength to defeat the robots and end the Omnic Crisis.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Whilst in the government's 'soldier enhancement program', he came to be officially known as Soldier: 24.

Reaper admits to being "a high-functioning psychopath", having a passion for murder and vengeance and is willing to kill even without a solid motivation. He is often conceited, sadistic and petty, as shown in the Cinematic Trailer where he goes out of his way to step on Winston's glasses before attempting to kill him.

Reaper also expresses dislike for the Omnics, according to his insults whenever he defeats Bastion or Zenyatta. He additionally has a tendency to get annoyed, an example of this being his reaction to Mercy resurrecting enemy teammates.

In spite of how cold-hearted he is, Reaper doesn't seem to mind cracking jokes related to death and The Grim Reaper, showing that even he has the time to display his own sense of humor.

He also has a indomitable will. Despite the agony of being disintegrated by Winston's tesla cannon, he is able to hold on to his sanity proving how pain tolerant Reaper is.

Powers and abilities

It was said that his military training gave him a 'sixth sense' for danger.

During the Omnic Crisis, he took part in a government experiment that was part of a soldier enhancement program. The intention behind it was to impart superhuman abilities on operatives to make them the perfect soldier.

Experiments made on him by Doctor Moira O'Deorain had left Reaper's cells in a constant state of simultaneously decay and regeneration at a hyper-accelerated rate. The process had been described as a form of 'molecular cleansing', whereby he was 'wiped away piece by piece'. As such, one moment he could appear as flesh and blood whilst the next he became a cloud of black smoke where he was disjointed but still remained in control of his molecules. Even after the complete destruction of his body, Reaper had been observed to retain some kind of form as a black mist and could seemingly regain his physical form. It was said that this condition left him in a form of 'constant agony' with only O'Deorain's experiments keeping him alive. However, as a result of these same treatments, Reaper found it difficult to control his anger.
