Red Series (Dark Angel)
The Red Series were a group that featured in Dark Angel.
History
The Red Series was the name given to a project done by a South African government in order to create a breed of supersoldiers at some point prior to the 21st Century. These individuals were selected from criminals and made use of advanced implants to remove their capacity to feel pain as well as increase their strength. Whilst incredibly powerful and durable in combat, the procedure was flawed as it ultimately killed the subjects within a years timeframe. In 2019, a team of Red Series commandos were dispatched to Seattle, Washington where they were tasked with the capture of the X5's from Manticore. This was because they were told by the scientists in charge of the project that the X5's DNA could be used to adapt the soldiers to their implants thus allowing them to not only tolerate their usage but live longer.
Overview
The criteria used to induct members of the Red Series meant that they consisted entirely of convicts that were selected from individuals on Death Row with the promise of several more months of life in addition to relative freedom in exchange to serving their country. After being chosen, the soldier went through a painful process where an implant was inserted at the back of their neck which attached itself to the brain stem and began rewiring the neural pathways. Once the process was complete, the resultant individual's pain receptors in the brain were deactivated and thus meant they felt no pain or fear. In addition, they were hyper-adrenalized which gave them greater physical strength and endurance. This allowed a Red Series supersoldier to withstand great levels of physical abuse such as multiple gunshots to the torso. The nature of their enhanced neural implants on their necks meant that they had extraordinary strength and durability which made them superior to even Manticore's Transgenics.
A problem with this augmentation process was the incredible strain it placed on the nervous system with the subject burning out within a matter of six months at minimum and a year at most.
