Biography

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Rex Tyler

He was noted to had grown up from a poor background. (Hourman v1 #5)

Many years ago, he was noted to had battled a costumed super-criminal named Doctor Cobalt who called himself the Lord of the Atom. The villain on one occasion was on the run with his chief henchman Jonathan MacIntyre where they attempted to run a roadblock set up by the police. Their vehicle was then caught by Hourman who was at the scene where Doctor Cobalt attempted to battle the superhero but was knocked out by his hired help MacIntyre. (Triumph v1 #1) In the aftermath, MacInytre was arrested and taken to court where he was sentenced to life in prison. Tyler was present at the court scene in his secret identity where he watched MacIntyre wife and son present during the hearing. Feeling he owed MacIntyre, Hourman in his masked guise visited his son the young Triumph at night at his home where he told the boy to learn from his father's mistakes and that he had a choice in life. This was a life changing event for the boy who looked to better himself and even become a hero. (Triumph v1 #3)

Personality and attributes

Among colleagues, he came to be known as Tick-Tock Tyler, the Hour-Man. (Adventure Comics v1 #48)

On the surface, he was said to had seem withdrawn and timid with his classmates in university thinking he was a nice person. (Hourman v1 #5)

By adulthood, he came to be known as a meek and mild scientist. (Adventure Comics v1 #48) At Bannerman, he was said to have had ideas but was too humiliated to share them. (Hourman v1 #5)

All his life, he had to accomplish miracles just to feel adequate. (Hourman v1 #5)

As Hourman, he came to be regarded as the underworld's most formidable foe. (Adventure Comics v1 #48)

Technology came to gall him when his son Rick Tyler began to take Miraclo against Rex's wishes. (Hourman v1 #5)

Powers and abilities

He came to discover a powerful chemical named Miraclo that incredible strength and the power of channelling lightning-speed that was almost as swift as thought. The Miraclo's effects were said to not be permanent and only lasted for an hour. (Adventure Comic v1 #48) It was regarded as a potentiogenic compound where it had made him famous at Bannerman. (Hourman v1 #5)

There were concerns that it was temporarily altering the users personality and was in fact changing their persona forever. (Hourman v1 #5)

  • Rex Tyler was created by Ken Fitch and Bernard Baily where he made his first appearance in Adventure Comics v1 #48 (March, 1940).

Alternate Versions

  • In Golden Age v1 #1 (1993), an alternate version of Rex Tyler appeared in the Golden Age reality that was a world in the Multiverse.
  • In JSA: The Liberty File v1 #1 (2000), an alternate version of Rex Tyler appeared in the New Frontier reality that was designated as Earth-40 in the Multiverse. This version operated as a covert government agent who went by the code name of the Clock.
  • In DC: The New Frontier v1 #1 (2004), an alternate version of Hourman appeared in the New Frontier reality that was designated as Earth-21 in the Multiverse.

Television

  • In Smallville, the Rex Tyler Hourman made a cameo appearance in the setting of the live-action television series starting from the episode "Absolute Justice, Part I".
  • In Batman: The Brave and the Bold, the Rex Tyler Hourman appeared in the setting of the animated television series in the episode "The Golden Age of Justice!" where he was voiced by actor Lex Lang.
  • In Legends of Tomorrow, the Rex Tyler Hourman appeared in the setting of the live-action television series second season where he was portrayed by actor Patrick J. Adams. Rex joined the Justice Society of America, a secret government organization created to combat the Nazis during World War II on behalf of the United States. Rex eventually rose to become the group's leader. Prior to 1942, Rex recruited Amaya Jiwe/Vixen into the team. Despite the JSA's discouragement against fraternizing within its ranks, Rex and Amaya fell in love and decided that once the war was over, they would leave the JSA so they could be together. In 1942 Rex encountered a group of time travelers known as the Legends, becoming a trusted ally. He also encountered Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash, and fought the rogue time traveler several times. During their last encounter Mick Rory/Heat Wave instructed Hourman to take the Waverider to 2016 and stop the Legends original arrival in 1942. The Reverse-Flash attempted to stop Hourman and succeeded in killing the Legends but Hourman was successfully able to venture through time. Crashing the Waverider in Star City during May 2016 just meters from the earlier Waverider and the younger versions of the team, Rex approached the team. After confirming his whereabouts, he introduced himself and warned the group not to disembark on the ship, or they'd all die, and revealed to a skeptical Mick that he was sent by his own future-self. While the Legends were skeptical to believe him, Rex tried to stress the grave consequences of traveling through time again, but suddenly faded out of existence much to the Legends' confusion.
  • In Stargirl, the Rex Tyler Hourman appeared in the live-action DC Universe television series where he was portrayed by actor Lou Ferrigno, Jr.

Films

  • In Justice Society: World War II, the Rex Tyler Hourman appeared in the setting of the animated film set in the Tomorrowverse where he was voiced by actor Matthew Mercer.
