Biography

Rintaro Okabe (Japanese: 岡部 倫太郎, Hepburn: Okabe Rintarō)

Whilst at the university, he came to form a friendship with fellow student Itaru where Okabe claimed that they had known each other for roughly 3 years. However, Itaru would state that they actually known one another for a year.

He came to look to gather further units for his college course leading to Rintaro attending a seminar taught by Shouichi Makise about the fundamental theory behind creating a time machine. Arriving early, he came to enter the room of the lecture when the building was seemingly shaken by an earthquake. He ran upstairs to find a satellite on the roof of the Akihabara Radio Tower.

In order to gather additional units for his college course, Rintaro attends a seminar being taught by Dr. Nakabachi about the fundamental theory behind creating a time machine held at Akihabara Radio Kaikan. He arrives early with Mayuri, and upon entering the room of the lecture, the building is seemingly shaken by an earthquake. He runs upstairs and finds a satellite on the roof of the building, but is quickly told not to worry by the person standing beside it. He then gets a text message from Mayuri and goes down to a lower floor where she is trying to buy an Upa toy from the coin machine. He ends up buying one just to show off, but is suprised when its revealed to be made of metal. Mayuri tells him that it is rare and he ends up giving it to her. As Shouichi begins his seminar, Rintaro, a staunch believer of time machines, recognizes the core material on which the professor speaks and makes a commotion, accusing the professor of having plagiarized the idea from John Titor, who spoke of this theory 10 years prior. He is pulled out of the seminar and meets Makise Kurisu for the first time, though she insists on having seen him just 15 minutes ago. Okabe has no idea what she is talking about and tries to escape the conversation by talking into his phone, but Kurisu snatches the phone away, revealing that it is off. After lying about the phone turning itself off when she grabbed it, Okabe takes his phone back and runs away. He then receives a message, but it comes through as all static, so he ignored it. Afterward, Rintaro talks to Mayuri about her Metal Upa which she lost, before they hear a scream come from upstairs. Rintaro rushes to the source of the sound to investigate and finds the body of Kurisu Makise in a pool of blood. Rintaro is so shaken by the incident that he is unable to even call the police and simply leaves along with Mayuri. He contacts his friend Itaru about it through a text message. Immediately after sending the text, the people in the street all disappear, and the satellite he saw earlier appears to have crashed into the roof of the Radio Tower. He questions Mayuri about the apparent disappearance of the pedestrians, who seems to not have noticed. Later, when he returns to the lab, he bumps into Suzuha Amane, who is quickly hired by Mr. Braun, Okabe's landlord, at the CRT store beneath the lab. Okabe later discovers that Itaru received the message, though 5 days earlier and broken into 3 messages, and that Shouichi Makise's lecture was canceled. While attending a lecture for credits that afternoon, he meets a perfectly unharmed Kurisu Makise. After that, he is in a state of shock, frequently touching Kurisu to verify that she is real, leading her to accuse him of sexual harassment. It was then that he realized that this was the real Kurisu. The girl ends up giving an lecture on time travel where she starts off by claiming its impossibility. This angers Okabe who goes on to challenge her claims. She welcomes the challenge and the two debate on the plausibiity of time travel, but Okabe was unable to counter her points.

After stumbling upon Moeka, a shy woman that only communicates by her phone, on the street of Akihabara, Okabe learns about the IBN 5100, an old and exceedingly rare PC that might be in Akihabara. Okabe also has Daru hack into SERN to find out some info related to the time machine. To his shock, SERN has been researching the time machine and already succeeded in making one. However, SERN did 14 experiments on humans, called the "Z-Program" and all humans that have been experimented on have already died and turned into a gel-like state, and were found in different places in the past. Daru found an unknown database of SERN which even Daru cannot crack. Okabe decides to ask Titor about the code and finds out that he needs the IBN 5100 in order to access SERN's secrets. Okabe starts searching for it and finds out that Faris' father once possessed one. He asks her about it, but she only agrees to tell him if he participates in a RaiNet battle against her. Okabe agrees and ends the game quickly by going for a suicide attack. Faris then reveals that the IBN was donated to the Yanabayashi shrine.

Okabe starts doing experiments with the PhoneWave (name subject to change) by trying to send text messages (D-Mails) to the past. Through repeated experiemts, much to Mr. Braun's chagrin, the group learns that they can only send messages back in time during a specific time of the day (10am to 6pm). Okabe then decides that they should send D-Mails with the intent of changing the past and the group agrees to send back the numbers of a winning lottery numbers, however, hesitant to get unwanted attention by winning first place, they settle for third instead. They send the D-Mail and Okabe is suddently hit with a sense of dizziness. When the dizziness fades away, he realizes that everyone in the lab has changed positions. He asks what happened with the lottery numbers, but everyne is confused at what he's talking about. Luka then arrives and reveals that a week prior, Okabe had given him the lottery numbers, but because Luka had written them down incorrectly, they did not win. Regardless, it showed Okabe that the PhoneWave could actually change the past. Realizing that he is the only one who seemed to realize that anything had changed, Okabe exchanges messages with John Titor, and learns about worldlines and Attractor Fields and that he has a special ability, which he can retain memories from before the worldline changes. He decides to call that ability Reading Steiner.
