Biography

Rita DeMara

DeMara functioned as a thief who infiltrated a secure Avengers warehouse to steal a high-tech exoskeleton. She bypassed the facility's security systems and successfully located the Yellowjacket costume, which had formerly belonged to Hank Pym. Upon donning the suit, she discovered its capabilities, including the ability to shrink in size and fire bio-electric 'stings' from the gloves. She utilized these new powers to engage in a physical altercation with the Wasp Janet van Dyne, who arrived at the scene to intercept her. During the combat, Rita used her shrinking ability to evade attacks and delivered several bio-shocks to her opponent. She eventually managed to escape the warehouse and the Wasp's pursuit by shrinking to a microscopic level, marking her successful theft of the Yellowjacket mantle and her entry into the criminal underworld. (Avengers v1 #264)

When first seen, Rita DeMara was a reluctant supervillainess who had stolen one of Hank Pym's Yellowjacket costumes, and modified it, making it more feminine (and removing the insect emblem). However, when she clashed with the Wasp, she became terrified upon shrinking, and was captured.[3]

Yellowjacket participates in a takeover of the Avengers Mansion, assisting one of the more powerful versions of the Masters of Evil as a professional criminal.[4] Defeated, Yellowjacket is sent to prison but is freed by the Fixer with amorous intentions. She flees and tries to gain revenge on the Wasp, but is distracted by the sight of Black Knight. Furious at being rejected, the Fixer tries to kill her. Black Knight helps Yellowjacket defeat him and the two part on possibly romantic terms.

During a time when no Avengers were active, her costume receives a call for help from an automated system at an old Avengers base. She finds herself teaming up with the Beast, The Captain, Falcon, Hercules, the Hulk and Jocasta. They battle the High Evolutionary wishing to jumpstart humanity's evolution through worldwide catastrophe. Yellowjacket helps battle through the Evolutionary's underground submarine base, fighting against dozens of his soldiers. Eventually the Evolutionary is defeated by Hercules, the two evolving out of reality.[6] She later briefly serves as a member of Superia's Femizons.

Her second affiliation with the Masters of Evil begins and ends during the Infinity War. Her team, led by Doctor Octopus, confronts the Guardians of the Galaxy inside the Avengers Mansion as the Masters had wished to take it over. Yellowjacket is soon betrayed by her side. Moments later, both teams are overwhelmed by waves of evil aliens. These aliens were impersonating all the super-powered beings involved. Each double wishes to take over the relevant body. Despite many aliens being slain, more show up.

The Guardians and the Masters both work together to stay alive. Events in the Infinity War series stop the flow of aliens. When Doctor Octopus desires to continue the fight, his men turn on him, not wanting to hurt those who had helped them. Yellowjacket is left behind and joined the Guardians.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Rita DeMara was a female human with an athletic build, fair skin, and shoulder-length brown hair. During her initial appearance, she was first seen in civilian clothing consisting of a light-coloured jacket over a dark top. After infiltrating the Avengers' storage facility, she transitioned into the Yellowjacket costume, which was a form-fitting yellow and black bodysuit. The costume featured a high, flared black collar and a yellow mask that covered the upper half of her face, leaving her mouth and chin exposed. Attached to the back of the suit were two translucent, insect-like wings. Her forearms were covered by long black gloves equipped with mechanical stingers on the wrists, and she wore matching black, thigh-high boots. (Avengers v1 #264)

Rita was an opportunistic and resourceful thief who relied on her technical intuition to master unfamiliar technology under pressure. She exhibited a determined and self-reliant temperament, successfully identifying and operating the complex shrinking mechanisms and offensive weaponry of the Yellowjacket suit immediately after acquiring it. Her behaviour was characterised by tactical pragmatism, as she prioritised evasion and the successful theft of the equipment over a prolonged or lethal confrontation with the Wasp. She displayed a calculating nature, using her new-found size-shifting abilities to exploit environmental weaknesses and navigate the storage facility to ensure her escape. (Avengers v1 #264)
