Biography

Roy Mustang (Japanese: ロイ・マスタング, Hepburn: Roi Masutangu) was a human male who was orphaned as a young age and came to be adopted by Chris Mustang who was his father's younger sister. She brought him up with the intention of becoming a fine gentleman but during his life he came to find that he had an infinity for alchemy. This saw him taking basic instruction in this craft from the master alchemist Berthold Hawkeye in the hope of becoming a source of strength and knowledge to the people of Amestris.

Roy Mustang first appeared investigating the mysterious powers of Edward and Alphonse Elric after their attempt at human transmutation became known to the military. Arriving in Resembool, Mustang learned of their tragic failure to revive their mother and the cost of their alchemic mistake. He approached Edward directly, offering him the opportunity to become a State Alchemist. Though stern, Mustang emphasized that the State Alchemists possessed resources and knowledge that could help Edward pursue his goals of restoring his brother’s body. Afterwards, Mustang observed Edward during the State Alchemist examination. Though Edward impressed the judges with his ability to transmute without a circle, Mustang maintained a reserved stance, evaluating Edward’s abilities as both remarkable and dangerous. He did not intervene directly in the test but was noted watching carefully, ensuring that Edward’s power and personality aligned with what the State required. After Edward passed, Mustang officially gave him the title of Fullmetal Alchemist, signifying Edward’s new role as a sanctioned operative under Mustang’s oversight. Later, Mustang demonstrated his authority and skill during missions where he accompanied Edward or directed operations against threats to the military. He showed confidence in battle and commanded subordinates decisively, using his flame alchemy with deadly precision to subdue enemies. His combat presence was efficient rather than showy, making it clear he viewed his alchemy as a tool of war and discipline.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Roy Mustang was depicted as a tall man with black hair worn short and slightly disheveled, dark eyes, and sharp, defined features. He typically wore the blue Amestrian State Military uniform, complete with a long coat, epaulettes, and boots, reflecting his rank as a colonel. His most distinctive accessory were his white gloves, each embroidered with a transmutation circle, which allowed him to perform his unique flame-based alchemy. His speciality led to him being known as the Flame Alchemist (焔の錬金術師 Honō no Renkinjutsushi).

Roy Mustang’s personality was complex, showing both ambition and a certain outward arrogance. He was confident in his abilities and often teased those beneath him, particularly Edward, with a dry sense of humor and a tone that could border on condescension. Despite this, he displayed loyalty to his subordinates and a clear sense of responsibility, indicating that his flippant exterior masked a deep commitment to both his men and his personal goals of reform within the military. His ambition to rise in rank was evident, but it was coupled with a vision of change rather than selfish pursuit.

In one case, he was shown to had used his flames to burn his wounds to seal them where he nearly passed out from the pain.

Powers and abilities

Mustang came to find that he had an affinity towards alchemy leading to him receiving training under master alchemist Berthold Hawkeye.

Roy Mustang was human, with no innate superhuman abilities, but as a State Alchemist, he was trained to the peak of physical and mental discipline. His unique alchemy specialized in flame creation and manipulation, achieved through the use of ignition cloth gloves inscribed with flame alchemy transmutation circles. By snapping his fingers, Mustang created a spark, which he then amplified and directed into controlled explosions of fire. This specialization made him a highly dangerous combatant, capable of devastating offense at both close and long range, with precision control allowing him to incapacitate or kill as needed

He made use of custom-made gloves that worked to enable his unique style of combat alchemy. These were made of a pyrotex/ignition cloth that could create sparks when Mustang rubbed his fingers together. In addition, they were embroidered with a unique flame alchemy transmutation circle allowing him to quickly use his flame alchemy in combat.
