SA-43 Endo/Exo-Atmospheric Attack Jet

The SA-43 Endo/Exo-Atmospheric Attack Jet is a space fighter that features in Space: Above and Beyond.

History

The SA-43 Endo/Exo-Atmospheric Attack Jet, also known as a Hammerhead, was a type of flight capable starfighter developed by Earth by the years leading to 2065. They would serve as the mainstay of the Marine Corps and served a critical role against the Chigs during the Chig War. (Episode: Pilot, Part 2)

Overview

These Hammerheads consisted of SCRAM engines enabled them to fly in an atmosphere and in the vacuum of space. They were adapted for a wide variety of combat situations namely normal combat, search and rescue, and possibly other missions. The canopies of the craft are also detachable allowing docking with space platforms and safe ejection in space. Systems that are known to exist in the Hammerheads include LIDAR (Laser Infrared Detection And Ranging), HUD (Heads-Up Display), ODP (Optical Disk Playback), and the Autopilot (also called "egghead").

Amongst the systems installed in these spacecraft included a LIDAR (Laser Infrared Detection And Ranging) and a HUD (Heads-Up Display). These systems were capable of being jammed by Chig fighters during their stealth operations. The cockpit canopies of the Hammerhead were detachable which allowed them to be removed either for safe ejection into space or as part of the disengaged sequence neeeded for docking. In the latter of the two, the canopy was removed from the fighter and entered into the hanger bay in order to allow their pilots to safely exit the craft. (Episode: Pilot, Part 2)

Compared to Chig fighters, the SA-43 was described as being more manevuerable and better armed. (Episode: Pilot, Part 2)
