Biography

Sabo (Japanese: サボ, Hepburn: Sabo) was born in the Goa Kingdom to noble parents who aspired for him to marry a royal princess to keep their family name secure but did not seem to care for Sabo as an individual. His father Outlook III, tired from work, was shown tearing apart a picture Sabo drew and ordering him to go to his room and study. One day, he got hurt in a fight with a boy from the royal family who used a knife, but Sabo's mother immediately began fretting over and apologizing in tears to the royal boy and his mother, being more concerned with repairing relations with the family and maintaining their status rather than tending her own son's injuries. Realizing he was nothing more than a way for his parents to secure wealth and status, Sabo fled to the Gray Terminal, leaving his parents to think he was dead. He would later meet Ace, and the two bonded over a shared dream to become pirates. For five years, they robbed people around Gray Terminal in order to collect treasure for their future pirating careers, with Ace trusting Sabo enough to share the secret of his parentage with him. Twelve years ago when they were aged 10, Ace told Sabo about a boy named Luffy who had been following him unsuccessfully. Sabo recommended for Ace to live with him in Gray Terminal to avoid Luffy, but Ace had declined, and one day as they were counting money, Luffy reached Gray Terminal and overheard the boys talking about becoming pirates. They decided to kill him to keep their secret safe, but were unable to, and freed him once they heard pirates coming. A group of Bluejam Pirates, led by Porchemy, was searching for Ace to get back the money he had stolen from them, and they spotted and captured Luffy. Worried that the pirates would find their treasure, Sabo and Ace watched in shock as Porchemy carried Luffy away to interrogate him for Ace's location. Sabo and Ace worked until evening to move their treasure somewhere else, and Sabo went to check on Luffy. He saw that Luffy had not told Porchemy anything yet and told Ace, and the duo broke into the pirates' hideout. Porchemy grabbed Ace, but Sabo hit the pirate with his staff before stealing another pirate's knife to cut Luffy free. Ace stayed behind to confront Porchemy, so Sabo joined him, and together the two defeated the pirate.

Sabo frantically coordinated a hasty relocation of their entire five-year stash of pirate savings deeper into the forests of Mount Colubo, recognizing that Porchemy would eventually break Luffy's spirit and uncover their hideout. After successfully transporting every chest and bag of gold to a new, secure location, Sabo scouted back toward the Bluejam Pirates' compound and discovered that Luffy was actively being tortured by Porchemy with spiked gloves, yet stubbornly refused to say a word. Stricken with immediate remorse for abandoning the child, Sabo breached the wooden walls of the hideout alongside Ace to launch a rescue mission, using his hollow metal pipe staff to shatter the guards' formation. While Sabo slashed through the lower-tier pirates and cut Luffy's physical bindings, Ace refused to retreat, forcing Sabo to hold his ground and join the fray to successfully overpower and defeat Porchemy. Following the intense skirmish, Sabo permanently moved out of the Gray Terminal wilderness and transitioned to living at the mountain hideout managed by the bandit leader Curly Dadan alongside Ace and a heavily weeping Luffy. Sabo spent weeks alongside Ace and Luffy conducting daily survival training, hunting giant wildlife across Mount Colubo, and picking fights with the city thugs of the Goa Kingdom. While celebrating a successful day of street skirmishes, Sabo was suddenly confronted by a wealthy man named Outlook III, who explicitly called out his name and commanded him to return home. Forced to flee deeper into the forest brush to evade custody, Sabo somberly confessed his deep hidden secret to Ace and Luffy, revealing that he was actually a high-born noble who had run away from home because his biological parents viewed him solely as a political tool to secure wealth. He openly expressed his ultimate dream to sail out into the open sea, gain absolute freedom, and write an extensive book documenting his global navigation travels. To solidify their unbreakable bond independent of social status, Sabo poured stolen sake into three distinct cups, clinking them together alongside Ace and Luffy to officially declare themselves sworn brothers forever. However, their peaceful era abruptly ended when the Bluejam Pirates cornered the trio on behalf of Sabo's father, forcing Sabo to voluntarily surrender to the authorities to permanently save Ace and Luffy from execution.

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Sabo was a human male characterized by a short, curly mane of blond hair, pronounced round eyes, and a visible gap in his smile where a front tooth had been knocked out. In his base state navigating the hazardous trash heaps of the Gray Terminal, he dressed in a large, black top hat fitted with a distinct pair of blue-tinted aviator goggles strapped across the base. He wore a tailored blue jacket with the sleeves casually rolled up to his forearms, a clean white cravat tied around his neck, and a pair of light cyan shorts. His outfit was fastened at the waist by a leather utility belt sporting a prominent flower-design buckle. To traverse the jagged mountains of debris and defend himself from local hostiles, he actively carried a long, hollow metal pipe which he brandished as a functional staff weapon. After eating the Flame-Flame Fruit, he came to be known as Flame Emperor Sabo.

Sabo was devoted to his dreams to the point that he agreed with Ace that the two of them had to kill Luffy so that he could not tell anyone about their treasure, though neither Ace nor Sabo knew how to kill a person nor had any experience, implying some degree of innocence despite their profession. According to Luffy, Sabo is a nicer older brother than Ace. He acknowledged Luffy's powers, and even encouraged his improvement. He helped Ace and Luffy get along when they were fighting, thus being the nice, diplomatic one of the trio.

Sabo's dream involves traveling around the world as a pirate. This is in order to write a book containing the story of everything he would see and every place he would visit during his journey. One of the reasons behind all this could be the 'segregation' that envelopes so much of the Goa Kingdom, a thing that could easily stir a freedom-loving spirit like Sabo's to ask himself what the world was really like outside the walls of High Town, and outside the island itself. However, he was ready to cast aside his dream for the sake of his loved ones. Sabo was loyal to his friends and, in this case his two "brothers", to the point that he would give in to the demands of his father, becoming miserable and "alone" in order to save both Luffy and Ace. After reawakening his memories, Sabo did not leave the Revolutionary Army to resume his dream as a free-sailing pirate, demonstrating how dedicated and loyal he is to the companions he has made.

Despite his recklessness and protective streak, Sabo demonstrates a pragmatic attitude in regards to his reputation and deeds as a revolutionary as shown when he reluctantly complied with Nefertari Cobra's plea to escape from Imu and the Five Elders assault to inform Dragon about the true ruler of the World Government. He also accepted being public condemned for assassinating a prominent royal due to the bolster the action provided for the Revolutionary Army's approval by the general public.

According to Luffy, Sabo is a nicer older brother than Ace. He acknowledged Luffy's powers, and even encouraged his improvement. He helped Ace and Luffy get along when they were fighting, thus being the nice, diplomatic one of the trio.

Powers and abilities

Sabo was a born human resident of the East Blue who possessed exceptional, self-taught physical combat and parkour survival skills at a very young age. On a basic feats level, his rigorous lifestyle navigating the cutthroat ecosystem of the junk wastes afforded him high-tier agility, structural climbing prowess, and predatory awareness that let him easily scale giant debris piles undetected. His primary physical capacity on the page manifested through his raw proficiency with a metal pipe staff, which he utilized with great leverage to batter adult targets, bypass basic blades, and hunt wildlife alongside Ace. Furthermore, Sabo possessed advanced tactical skills in street pickpocketing, stealth espionage, and economic counting, allowing him to successfully run covert operations inside the urban centers of the Goa Kingdom and routinely escape the authorities without leaving a trace.

Sabo possesses great fighting skills. As a child, Sabo already exhibited high physical capabilities and hand-to-hand combat from the very intense training he endured in the harsh environment of Mt. Colubo. He and Ace together were able to topple Porchemy, a massive man, when the two of them arrived to save Luffy. Sabo was able to beat Luffy, despite Luffy already having the power of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, fifty times in one day. He was also able to beat Ace twenty-four times, although he lost to Ace twenty-six times.

As the chief of staff of the Revolutionary Army, Sabo has command over all lower ranking members, with only one direct superior, Supreme Commander Dragon, to answer to. His bounty of 602,000,000 Beli proved that the World Government views him as an extremely dangerous threat. After the events of the Levely, Sabo is now known as the 'Flame Emperor', with his reputation having skyrocketed to the point that he is now considered a legend, with his influence said to be even greater than that of his boss Dragon. He rose to the position of second-in-command and was able to take on Diamante, a top executive of the Donquixote Pirates, as well as Jesus Burgess, the captain of the Blackbeard Pirates' first ship and one of their strongest members, without any difficulty
