Biography

Captain Sajin Komamura.

Sajin Komamura (Japanese: 狛村 左陣, Hepburn: Komamura Sajin) was a wolf-like creature who was one of the inhabitants of the Soul Society. At some point, he was noted to had left his family after feeling ashamed of living in the shadows. Later on, he came to meet Captain-Commander Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto who decided to offer Komamura a place in the Gotei 13 despite not being human. For this offer, Sajin came to be eternally grateful and loyal to Captain Yamamoto. One day, Komamura was sitting on a grassy area when he was sensed by a human soul named Kaname Tōsen. Tōsen had not know where Sajin was due to his blindness. It was only when Komamura spoke that he realized he had talked in the wrong direction. Complimenting Komamura’s ability to hide his presence very well, Tōsen noted that he had never been able to not feel someone’s presence before, even though his eyes could not see. Komamura was highly touched, for this was the first time that he was not looked upon as an outcast due to not being human. As a result, he felt a sense of kinship with Kaname after this encounter. Komamura would Tōsen again during their time when they were both ranked members of the Gotei 13 with Sajin being introduced to Sōsuke Aizen by Tōsen. By modern times, he came to be Captain of the 7th Division of the Gotei 13. In that time, he was present at the emergency captain's meeting regarding the questioning of Gin Ichimaru’s apparent slip of duty in handling the 'ryōka' who had somehow entered into the Soul Society. Afterwards, Aizen was seemingly murdered with his body left hanging within the centre of the Seretei. Both Komamura and Tōsen visit Aizen's body in the 4th Division Relief Station with Sajin not having spoken a word. On the day of Rukia Kuchiki's execution, his lieutenant, Tetsuzaemon Iba, rushed to him and profusely apologizes for his lateness. Komamura interrupted him and said he knew that Iba understood that he needed time to think about current events.

He was with Kaname Tōsen to oppose the intruders of Soul Society as well as the 'traitor' shinigami from the 11th division together, along with their lieutenants. They head off Kenpachi Zaraki while he escorts the ryōka to the execution grounds, and fight him as a pair. After Kenpachi defeated Tōsen's bankai, Komamura steps in to block the final blow with his helmet, breaking it. He begins to fight Kenpachi with his own bankai, but abandons the battle when he senses that General Yamamoto is fighting someone. While Komamura fought for General Yamamoto and the Gotei 13, Tōsen fought for the justice the Gotei 13 represented. Thus, when Tōsen chooses to side with Sōsuke Aizen in his betrayal of Soul Society, Komamura is shocked and feels Tōsen has lost his morals. In his anger, Komamura confronts Aizen himself, but is quickly defeated when Aizen uses a level 90 kidō spell on him. Komamura confronts Tōsen verbally as he departs Soul Society, asking if his friend also fought for the justice he vowed to protect. As Tōsen's answer showed he was still following his own sense of justice, Komamura decides to awaken his friend with his own hands.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Sajin Komamura was extremely large character, being 57 cm taller than his subordinate Jirōbō and even more physically imposing. The more notable trait held by him that was also quite unusual was that he was an anthropomorphic canine; possessing characteristics of both foxes and wolves.

Komamura was initially very self-conscious about his appearance. While he has since removed the bamboo helmet (cloth headgear before he became a captain) that once covered his face, the rest of his clothing is designed to hide all but the smallest hints of his animal nature. His large gloves are the prime example of this, as they entirely cover his hands and go well up his arms.

Komamura is also a very serious man, deeply scarred by the times when he was spurned by Soul Society for his appearance. He is not tough or cruel to his Division, preferring to lead them with impartiality. His favorite food is meat, but he dislikes carrots, supposedly because his father once told him that carrots were "not for their kind." Komamura tends to growl when angered. Despite being a gentle person, he is cold, ruthless and calculating when fighting. Once he is done fighting, however, he reverts to his gentle, giant self.

In contrast to his imposing physical stature, Komamura has a heart of gold, as well as being a loyal and grateful subordinate to Captain-Commander Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, to whom he owes great gratitude for taking him in; so grateful that he would even die for him.

Before meeting Kaname Tōsen, he also hid his spiritual pressure whenever possible so that others would not pay attention to his appearance. After his fight with Kenpachi Zaraki (during which his helmet was destroyed) in midst of the invasion of Soul Society, he gained enough confidence to go without the helmet.

Powers and abilities

Sajin Komamura was a soul (魂魄, Konpaku) that emerged with the Soul Society that had the ability to sense and manipulate Reiatsu (霊圧, Spiritual Pressure). It was this quality that also made capable of becoming a shinigami (死神, death god(s); Viz "Soul Reaper(s)"). As a captain, Komamura possesses an incredible amount of spiritual energy. When Komamura releases his spiritual energy, it had the same magnitude of his enormous strength, and tends to destroy the area around him. He was quite skilled in hiding his spiritual presence because, due to his appearance, he does it quite frequently out of what he feels was a necessity to hide from others. It was shown that his Reiatsu manifested as a red form of energy.

Komamura's zanpakutō was Tenken (天譴, lit. Heaven's Punishment, Viz: Sword of Heavenly Retribution). Its shikai command was "roar" (轟け, todoroke). In its shikai, Tenken created various body parts of a giant to copy whatever body part Komamura moves; for example, should Komamura swing his sword, a gigantic disembodied arm wielding a sword appears and does the same thing.

Tenken's bankai, named Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō (黒縄天譴明王, lit. Heavenly Punishment of Kokujō's King, Viz: Divine Retribution, Black Ropes of Ruination) brings forth the entire giant. Like in the shikai, the giant copies every movement made by Komamura. Kokujō is the Japanese name for one of the eight circles of hell in Buddhism (Kālasūtra).

Within the Soul Society, he was the Captain of the 7th Division of the Gotei 13.
