Biography

Origin

Sam Scudder in The Flash v1 #105.

Samuel Joseph Scudder was a male human who was born in the modern age on Earth.

He came upon the existence of Mirror World but never explored it as he deemed it too dangerous but ultimately looked to access that dimension in a bid to escape jail. Tipping the prison barber, he used a mirror at set angles to transport himself into the mirror dimension. Once there, he explored the landscape and came upon the native inhabitants who were a primitive race of telepathic women called the Orinocas who initially wanted to kill him. However, they came to be fascinated by his use of mirrors as they had seen no such object in their world before and asked him to build such items for their use. Scudder complied and in exchange the Orinocas provided for all his needs which included remaking his Mirror Master costume. Despite having everything, Scudder came to be bored of this existence as he could commit no crimes as the people of Orinocas City provided for all his needs. In desperation, he decided to trick the Flash into coming to the Mirror World so that he could take Scudder back to Earth. Using a mirror image, he had the Flash follow his duplicate into the mirror dimension where the Scarlet Speedster managed to evade the Orinocas to capture Scudder whereupon he vibrated their molecules at superspeed to return them to the Earth. At the Central City Army Reserve, the Mirror Master sprung his trap on the Flash where he used a device to convert his foe into a mirror state and intended to shatter him. However, the hero vibrated his molecules to change his states back to a 3 dimensional form whereupon he knocked out Scudder thus leading to the Mirror Master's arrest. (The Flash v1 #126)

He later continued his search of a legendary mirror that he had heard of and pursued for many years. On this occasion, he was successful in finding his prize and had to smuggle it back to the United States. The unique relic led to him performing hundreds of experiments on it when he discovered a beautiful blonde haired figure within it. He came to learn that the figure was a woman named Narcissa where he learnt that she was an Atlantean trapped within Mirror-Limbo. She was a scientist from before the sinking of Atlantis who long ago heeded the warnings about the destruction of the city. Narcissa decided to save herself using her Unified-Field Flux Generators to flee into a strange dimension within a mirror that was ancient even in her age. She had intended to emerge once the destruction had passed but so great was the cataclysm that her equipment designed to free her from the mirror was also destroyed thus leading to her being trapped for eons. At first, Scudder saw it as a challenge to free her but he eventually fell in love with the Atlantean woman and looked to be with her in the real world. However, his equipment could not undo the feat achieved by Atlantean super-science. The lovers were thus separated until Scudder hatched on a plan to use his old enemy the Flash to free Narcissa by taking her place in Mirror-Limbo. As the Mirror Master, he struck at the new club named Reflections in order to draw the hero's attention and conducted numerous other crimes with the intention of the Flash to chase him through mirrors. This was to have him rush into the legendary mirror and thus take Narcissa's place but the hero felt that this was a trap where he shattered it instead but was unaware of the woman trapped inside. A despondent Mirror Master looked at the shattered pieces of the mirror where he wept for the loss of his love who was gone forever. (The Flash v1 #306)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

At some point, he began to date Cold's sister the Golden Glider where she was part of the Rogues. A year and a half ago, their group were involved in a heist that was thwarted by the Flash but Scudder managed to rescue his team mates. At their lair, he blamed the Trickster Axel Walker for failing as lookout on the job. In anger, the gang of crooks began to fight amongst themselves but Captain Cold came to them after being approached by a benefactor who offered to use a genome recoder on them to give them superpowers. During the process, an explosion occurred that bonded the Rogues with their equipment leading to Mirror Master being trapped in Mirror World whilst Golden Glider was left in a coma.
