Sam Whitemoon

Sam Whitemoon was Benjamin Whitemoon's nephew, and a member of the Navajo tribe that lived in and around the town of Dead River. He was very irreverent towards his uncle and his beliefs, wanting nothing to do with the traditional tribal ways, intent on going to Hollywood to become an actor. He was confident that his long hair, which had taken him several years to grow out and which he was very vain and proud of, would make him a big movie star. The only thing he needed was money to get to Hollywood.

So along with his two white friends Andy Cavanaugh and Fatso Gibbens he set about robbing the store belonging to Ray and Martha Spruce. In the process Sam noticed some jewelry which he recognized as being ilinii, sacred tribal relics (given to Ray by Benjamin), and Sam attempted to take them. When Ray refused, Sam shot and killed both him and Martha, then he and his friends departed in Andy's Firefird convertible. Sam told his friends to each go home and gather up whatever personal possessions they wished to bring with them, and then meet at his house later, so they could skip town and head for Hollywood before the police became alerted to the Spruces' murder.

Old Chief Wood'nhead, the cigar store Indian that stood outside of the Spruces' store, put a stop to their plans. Animated by supernatural forces enraged at what had happened, the wooden Indian stalked and killed Andy and Fatso before coming to Sam's house. Sam attempted to fend Old Chief Wood'nhead off with his shotgun, to no avail, and, fleeing from the living statue, locked himself in his bathroom, planning to escape out the window. Before he could however, Old Chief Wood'nhead's arms burst through the wall and grabbed him by the long hair he was so proud of.

Sam struggled to escape but was dragged through the hole in the wall and screamed as Old Chief Wood'nhead used his hatchet to scalp him. Later, Benjamin Whitemoon, visiting the Spruces' ransacked store, would find his dead nephew's bloody scalp held in the once-again unmoving Old Chief Wood'nhead's hand.
