Sanger Rainsford was an American big game hunter and author. He espoused a life philosophy which posited that there were only two kinds of people in the world; hunters and hunted. During a return trip by sea after hunting jaguars, his friend Whitney asked Rainsford if he would change places with the animal. Rainsford merely reiterated his belief in the hunters' class system, claiming nothing would ever put him, a skilled hunter, in such a position. As fate would have it, Rainsford would be.

After Whitney had gone to bed, Rainsford, thinking he heard gunshots in the distance, leaned too far over the railing of their yacht and fell overboard. The yacht continued without him and Rainsford was forced to swim to the nearby Ship Trap Island. Here he found a palatial mansion belonging to a retired Cossack army officer and hunter, General Zaroff, who welcome the author. Unfortunately it soon became clear that Zaroff was a lunatic who hunted people for sport. Given a knife, Rainsford was let loose in the jungle and told he had three days in which to elude the General.

Now, Rainsford knew what it meant to be hunted. However, no mere civilian, the hunter in Rainsford allowed him to be resourceful against his adversaries. He set traps which killed one of Zaroff's prized hunting dogs as well as his hulking servant, Ivan. Ultimately, cornered by Zaroff, Rainsford jumped into the sea. He survived and later found his way back to the mansion.

He proposed to Zaroff a hand-to-hand fight. The loser would be fed to the General's dogs, and the winner would sleep in Zaroff's comfortable bed. Rainsford won the fight, killing Zaroff and feeding him to his own dogs, before sleeping in what he considered the most comfortable bed he'd ever lain in.
