Biography

Candice "Candy" Jean Gennaro

Candy Gennaro was introduced mid-battle when the Justice League engaged two rival factions of the Kobra organization at a dockside confrontation. As chaos erupted, she found herself trapped behind a force-field deployed by Kobra’s forces and inadvertently slipped into their Sea Serpent submarine. There, she overheard Lord Naga-Naga and his henchmen discussing the properties of the Serpent’s Egg, an alien gem with psycho-reactive armor potential. In a desperate act, Candy stole the gem, which bonded to her—forming a nearly impenetrable second skin. Empowered by this unrequested transformation, she tampered with the Kobra vessel’s control systems to escape, demonstrating both instinctual survival and raw power. On the streets afterward, pursued by Kobra’s minions, she fled to the roof of the Power Company headquarters in San Francisco, where she intercepted a hostile strike team. Though quickly overcome and knocked unconscious by the mercenaries, her brief resistance and obvious potential caught the attention of Josiah Power. Impressed, he offered her a provisional position as an associate of the Power Company under the codename Sapphire, granting her safety, mentorship, and a legitimate path forward. (Power Company: Sapphire v1 #1)

Still adjusting to her powers, she participated in their initial missions, working alongside heroes like Bork, Striker Z, Skyrocket, and Manhunter. Her crystalline physiology made her both a front-line fighter and a defensive powerhouse, but she struggled with self-confidence, feeling overshadowed by more seasoned teammates. Her lighthearted personality contrasted with the often mercenary tone of the group, giving her a more optimistic outlook that helped humanize the team. (Power Company v1 #1)

Sapphire’s personal life began to complicate her role as a hero. She faced friction with her boyfriend, who was uncomfortable with her new lifestyle and the dangers it brought. This tension highlighted the cost of heroism on her relationships, mirroring themes common in more street-level superhero stories. At the same time, Sapphire grew closer to her teammates, especially Skyrocket, who mentored her and encouraged her to embrace leadership qualities within missions. (Power Company v1 #4)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Sapphire was a female human metahuman whose body took on the form of a reflective, gemstone-like second skin. Her physical frame—once slender and street-worn—became coated in a smooth, shimmering layer of bluish crystalline armor that covered her from head to toe. It resembled polished gem facets rather than traditional metal plating, refracting light across its surface. Her original dark hair and juvenile features remained visible beneath the gem-like overlay, creating a striking blend of youthful humanity and alien fortitude. The gem shell could shift subtly with her movements, indicating a living, responsive armor rather than a rigid encasement. (Power Company: Sapphire v1 #1)

Candy was optimistic, lighthearted, and eager to prove herself. She often cracked jokes and served as the “heart” of the Power Company, keeping morale up even when tensions within the team ran high. However, she was also deeply insecure, doubting her ability to measure up to more experienced heroes and struggling to reconcile her private life with her public responsibilities. Her willingness to grow and learn from mistakes made her one of the more relatable members of the team. (Power Company v1 #4)

Powers and abilities

Sapphire’s alien gem granted her a crystalline physiology that dramatically enhanced her physical capabilities. She possessed superhuman strength, durability, and stamina, allowing her to trade blows with metahuman threats. Her gem-body could refract and project powerful energy blasts, giving her a strong ranged option in combat. She could also manipulate crystalline constructs for offensive and defensive purposes, creating barriers or shaping her energy into solidified forms. Though powerful, her abilities were tied directly to the alien gem itself, making her vulnerable if separated from it. (JLA: The Power Company v1 #1)
