Sarge Steel

Later on, he was arrested by the authorities when his gun that was a Luger had been used in the murder of various individuals in Europe. He came to be cleared temporarily of the deaths when he was approached by a blue-eyed blonde woman named Inga Ross. She had taken his gun and claimed that he would die unless he followed her instructions. The pair would take a plane to a remote country where they were forced to land leading to them being confronted by the mastermind of this plot who was a Nazi war criminal called Rudolf Wolk who was also known as the Smiling Skull. The man had been believed to had been dead but was quite active in Europe over the last few months where he came to learn that his gun had a twin which Wolk's organization had managed to determine was in Sarge Steel's possession. To draw Steel out, he kidnapped Inga Ross's father and forced her to have the American come abroad so that the Smiling Skull could take him hostage. (Sarge Steel v1 #3)

DC

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Sargent Steel

Sarge Steel was later sent in to investigate the country of Bialya which had re-opened its borders and became a trendy vacation spot after months of a media blackout. During this time, he would encounters Captain Atom, Major Force and the second Rocket Red as various attacks rattled the country. (Captain Atom Annual v2 #2)

The Kobra Cult retrieved the Spear of Destiny from the Soviet official who had it, and assassinated him. Nightshade later stole the Spear from Kobra, and handed it over to Sarge Steel, where it was inventoried and stored away. (Spectre v3 #21)

Iron Munro rejected Sarge Steel’s numerous offers to come back to work, but finally accepted when Steel told him the Baron had killed one of his agents. Sarge wanted him to stop the Baron from introducing Stardust, a nanite-based drug, onto the streets of Georgia. (Damage v1 #2) Sarge advised a senator not to subsidize government projects to Symbolix because they would have no oversight, but he knew the senator would ignore his advice. Sarge learned that the Baron hacked into the Bureau and learned that Sarge had put Iron Munro on his trail. (Damage v1 #4)

Sarge Steel approached Arsenal, knowing he was light on funds after the Titans disbanded. He wanted Arsenal to retrieve Sing Lu, a former drug runner he said was involved in dealing weapons of mass destruction, from Hong Kong. Sarge had lied, wanting to put the retired Lu on trial for purely political reasons to please his higher-ups. He spread word to Lu that Arsenal was an assassin targeting his daughters. Lu and Arsenal both realized they'd been duped, so when Arsenal handed over a trenchcoated man to Steel and received his paycheck he revealed that he'd brought his contact Feng back from Hong Kong for a life in the states. He put a knife to Sarge Steel's throat and said he didn't like being treated like a puppet. (Arsenal Special v1 #1)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was create with a different history of events.

He was put in charge of the investigation of an attack on Project Cadmus which was made by the Brother Eye satellite that had gone rogue. (OMAC v4 #2)

  • Sarge Steel was created by Joe Gill and Dick Giordano where he made his first appearance in Sarge Steel v1 #1 (December, 1964).

Alternate Versions

  • In The Multiversity: Pax Americana v1 #1 (2015), an alternate reality version of Sarge Steel appeared in the new Earth-4 in the restored Multiverse. President Harley, inspired by comic books, created the super team Pax Americana to bring peace to the world. In a government attempt to create a superhero, Captain Allen Adam was suited with the met material Dilustel, and exposed to the unstable element U-235. The scientists in charge of the experiment also secretly placed an artificial black hole in Adam’s head, at the orders of Sarge Steel‘s superiors. Adam, as Captain Atom, gained godlike powers, and word came down that he had to be destroyed as too dangerous. In 2014 he fled the universe when he learned that his own government was after him. Sarge Steel was assigned to punish the scientists responsible for his creation. He told them they unleashed Hell on Earth, and he was what crawled out to kill them, before brutally mowing them down. In 2015 President Harley was shot dead by Peacemaker. Harley had planned his own sacrifice, and was working on a scheme of redemption that relied on Captain Atom being able to restore him from the dead. Vice-president Eden took control of America, and declared the superhero dead. Peacemaker was brought to the interrogation room, and given a savage beating by Sarge Steel, refusing to explain his action.

In other media

Television

  • In Naomi, a character named Commander Henry Steel was modelled on Sarge Steel in the setting of the CW live-action television series where he was portrayed by actor Brian Brightman. This version was a U.S. Military Commander based in Port Oswego who came to be in charge of the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF) which was a DOD and Naval Intelligence program made to to investigate other worldly threats such as aliens.

Films

  • In Batman and Harley Quinn, Sarge Steel appeared in the setting of the animated film where he was voiced by actor John DiMaggio. He was shown as being an A.R.G.U.S. commander who sought Batman's help to stop Poison Ivy and the Floronic Man.
