Biography

Origin

The First X-Man in Classic X-Men v1 #44.

Scott Summers was a male human Mutant born the son of Christopher Summers and his wife Katherine Ann Summers. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #144) His parents later had another child with this being a younger brother named Alexander Summers. (X-Men v1 #54)

When Scott was a young child, he was plagued by mysterious headaches his doctors could never properly diagnose. His mother feared that it might be cancer or some kind of aneurysm, never suspecting that his headaches were actually a side effect of her son's burgeoning mutant power. (X-Men: Prelude to Schism v1 #3)

He was 10 years old and his brother was 6 years old when their parents took them on a flight on-board their father's plane. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #144)

The brothers were then taken to County General Hospital in Anchorage with Scott's injuries leading to him suffering from some memory loss. In this time, the siblings were deemed orphans leading to Dr. Robyn Hanover taking custody of Scott Summers as she was the administrator of a state-run orphanage in Nebraska. They were then taken to live Sunset Home for Foundlings where the orphans had to stay until they were adopted by a family. (Uncanny Origins v1 #1)

Mr. Sinister played many roles in Scott's life. As Michael Milbury, he was the head of the orphanage. As Nathan Masters, he was the chief doctor and as 'Lefty' or Nate, he was a fellow orphan. Sinister understood that Scott's recurring headaches were caused by his emerging mutant powers and, through trial and error, would find that ruby quartz glasses helped ease his pain. Sinister tormented Scott as Lefty and even killed his potential foster parents before they could adopt him. When Scott befriended a new doctor, Robyn Hanover, who was able to reach the boy thanks to his admiration for planes and pilots, Sinister brainwashed her. From that day on, she acted as cold toward Scott as the rest of the orphanage staff. Fortunately for Scott, just when he felt more alone in the world than ever, he was telepathically contact by Charles Xavier and his young ward, Jean Grey. Although the glimpse Scott caught of them was brief, he formed a bond with Jean in that moment that would last forever. (Classic X-Men v1 #42)

After a training session, Professor X came to reveal the latest recruit to join the school with this being a beautiful red headed woman named Jean Grey. (X-Men v1 #1)

X-Men

Now calling himself Professor X, Xavier was ready to reveal the X-Men to the world. Soon the threat of the mutant terrorist known as Magneto became very real and Xavier called upon his X-Men to prepare for their first battle against his one-time friend. Through Xavier's guidance, Cyclops and the X-Men succeeded in stopping Magneto from taking over the Cape Citadel missile base, forcing the master of magnetism to flee. (X-Men v1 #1) Later when the mutant teleporter known as the Vanisher began stealing government secrets, Professor X offered the X-Men's aid to the government to stop him. Xavier himself defeated the Vanisher by using his mental powers to cut off his access to his powers, allowing the X-Men to easily capture him and his minions. (X-Men v1 #2) Later when the Angel had another personality shift following exposure to radiation unleashed by a test by Stark Industries, Cyclops and the X-Men stood back to allow the armored hero Iron Man deal with the danger posed by the Angel until he reverted back to normal. (Tales of Suspense v1 #49) Cyclops and his teammates later met the supremely powerful hero known as the Sentry, assisting him in defeating his foe the General who was attempting to steal nuclear weapons to launch against the nation of France. (Sentry/X-Men v1 #1) About this time, Scott began to develop feelings for Jean Grey, but kept his feelings secret because he feared that his powers might someday harm her. It was about this time that Xavier soon located another mutant, the immovable Blob who was working as part of a carnival freak show and sent the X-Men to recruit him. However the X-Men soon learned the error of welcoming the Blob in with open arms when he turned out to be uninterested in joining the X-Men and later attacked the school. While the X-Men kept the Blob and his army of carnies at bay, Xavier completed a device that allowed him to wipe out all memory of the X-Men's headquarters and secret identities from the mind of the Blob and his cohorts. (X-Men v1 #1)

After the team graduated, Xavier took a short leave of absence and nominated Scott as leader while he was gone, sensing his natural talent for this position. (X-Men v1 #7) Secretly, Scott cared deeply for his teammate, Jean, but did not dare to admit his love, because leadership required his full attention and he did not want private feelings for a member of his team to influence his decisions. He also worried that he could injure a lover with his uncontrollable optic beam and the fact that the handsome Angel flirted heavily with Jean did not help matters either. One day, Scott was trying to compose his thoughts in a letter to Jean when Beast burst in, battered and bruised by a mob of humans that attacked him just for being a mutant. (X-Men v1 #8)

Return to the Present

When Professor Xavier was seemingly killed, the X-Men were ordered to disband by Fred Duncan. Upon reading Prof. Xavier's will, his fortune was to be used for a trust fund, with the mansion becoming the property of the X-Men and Scott to act as a trustee for both the fund and the school. (X-Men v1 #46) From then on, Jean and Scott were almost inseparable and went on several missions together. Even when the X-Men were disbanded by FBI Agent Fred Duncan after Professor Xavier's death, Jean and Scott stayed together. Scott found a job as a radio moderator while Jean worked as a photo model. To give her role more credibility, Scott acted as her overly jealous boyfriend. (X-Men v1 #48) When dozens of latent mutants were summoned to San Francisco by Mesmero and what seemed to be Magneto who was actually an android duplicate. The X-Men came to be reunited and were overpowered by the villains and their mutant army. (X-Men v1 #50)

Afterwards, the original team decided that it was time to try and live a life outside of superheroing. Only Cyclops remained behind to help to train the new team. He felt that he would not fit in with society, living in constant fear his optic blast could injure somebody. (X-Men v1 #94) However, this diverse new team was made up of independent adults and loners and they didn't work as well together as the original team, despite the hard training that Cyclops put them through. Thunderbird paid the ultimate price for this in the team's next mission. Trying to prove himself, John Proudstar jumped aboard the escaping Count Nefaria's plane and took it apart until it exploded. The death of one of his charges lay heavy on Cyclops' mind. (X-Men v1 #96)

Mutant Revolution

In an effort to stop the Phoenix, Iron Man had created a machine which he believed capable of destroying it. However, it would instead split the Phoenix Force which came to now possess five avatars who were Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Colossus and Illyana Rasputin. With this power, they came to take Hope Summers with them as they headed to Earth in order to change the world. (Avengers vs. X-Men v1 #5)

Return

In the aftermath, the X-Men were reported dead following an altercation with Nate Grey. This saw widespread anti-Mutant sentiment as the government began arresting Mutants and also looking to administer a vaccine that eliminated the X-Gene. As a result, many Mutants went into hiding as public opinion had turned against the X-Men. Summers then attended a political rally at Empire State University where a Senator gained the approval of a wide crowd for further anti-Mutant measures. On camera, Cyclops called on Mutants to rally under his banner as mankind was looking to exterminate them and asked them to meet him where it all began in Salem Center, Westchester. Whilst waiting, he was ambushed by the Reavers, Purifiers and Sapien League who sought to murder him but he was assisted by the resurrected Wolverine who helped him defeat their attackers. (Uncanny X-Men v5 #11)

Overview

Personality and attributes

He was sometimes given the nickname of Slim Summers. As one of the X-Men, he came to take the code name of Cyclops. (X-Men v1 #1) His status as the team leader and being one of the founding members of his team led to him also being known as the First X-Man. (X-Men v1 #42) On Krakoa, he had to hide the fact that he had died and been reborn forcing him to take on a new identity in the field as Captain Krakoa. (X-Men v6 #6)

Scott frequently listened to the radio, and even worked as a DJ for some time. (X-Men v1 #48)

Iceman disliked Cyclops' inability to socialize with his fellow X-Men. In his view, Cyclops was a grouch who thought that smiling or having fun was sinful. (X-Men v1 #5)

Scott Summers was the son of Major Christopher Summers who was a pilot in the U.S.A.F. and his mother was Katherine Ann Summers. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #144) He had a younger brother who was named Alexander Summers. (X-Men v1 #54) Unknown to him initially, he had another younger brother who was named Gabriel Summers. (X-Men: Deadly Genesis v1 #6)

Whilst being an outlaw, he came to recruit a new team of X-Men with his student and teammate Eva Bell showing a romantic interest in Cyclops, though Summers did not reciprocate these feelings. (Uncanny X-Men v3 #5)

Powers and abilities

He came to learn that he was a Mutant who was given superhuman powers from birth. (X-Men v1 #1) According to Apocalypse, Cyclops was registered as being an Alpha-level Mutant. (X-Men v2 #97)

His power manifested as a powerful energy beam that emerged from his eyes. The energy beam was strong enough to smash targets into walls or destroy barriers in its path. (X-Men v1 #1)

It took the utmost control for him to fire his optic blasts on a lower setting. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #144)

Cyclops potentially had the capacity to will his optic blasts to twist and curve in any given direction without need to bounce off a solid surface. (Cyclops v3 #11)

Under Professor X, he underwent training that would allow him to operate in the field as a superhero. (X-Men v1 #1)

Part of his costume included a visor where a control was located on the side of the headband. This allowed him better control in managing his eye beams and helped him control its intensity. (X-Men v1 #1)

At one point, he came to be the host of a part of the Phoenix Force and gained incredible cosmic power as a result. (Avengers vs. X-Men v1 #5)
