The Sea Devils
The team was first assembled during a deep-sea treasure hunting expedition in the vast waters of the Pacific Ocean. Four individual, highly skilled skin-divers who were previously total strangers—Dane Dorrance, Biff Bailey, Judy Walton, and her younger brother Nicky Walton—happened to cross paths while exploring the seabed. Their routine search for sunken gold took a catastrophic turn when an immense, predatory prehistoric sea beast emerged from the ocean depths, threatening to trap and devour the divers. Recognizing that none of them could survive the leviathan alone, the four divers quickly formed an impromptu tactical alliance to pool their skills and outwit the monster. They located a stray floating naval mine that had been lost by a passing minesweeping boat, navigating the volatile explosive directly into the pathway of the gargantuan creature. By successfully detonating the mine and destroying the beast before it could reach the mainland, they saved the coastline and realized their natural synergy. Emerging safely at the surface as close friends, they made a mutual pact to stay together permanently, officially naming their new alliance the Sea Devils. (Showcase v1 #27)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
Overview
In appearance, the newly formed maritime squad resembled a rugged, tightly-knit fellowship of professional athletic divers rather than a traditional superhero league or a heavily armed naval division. They functioned as a highly collaborative, unpowered team that relied entirely on peak human conditioning, specialized diving training, and absolute mutual trust while navigating hostile underwater landscapes. Despite lacking supernatural mutations or Atlantean magic, they maintained a cool, highly disciplined demeanor when facing colossal terrors, prioritizing aquatic agility and quick battlefield logic. Their immediate objective focused entirely on exploring the deepest trenches of the ocean floor, locating lost historical shipwrecks, and protecting coastal human civilizations from rogue marine fauna. To achieve this, they deployed specialized private vessels and cutting-edge oceanographic equipment, forming an efficient scouting unit capable of tracking threats beneath the waves. Their ultimate goal shifted toward establishing a permanent global maritime rescue network, dedicating their lives to uncovering the deepest secrets of the underwater frontier. Regarding their clothing and costumes, the members completely rejected traditional cloth superhero capes and standard civilian clothing, opting instead for highly practical, specialized skin-diving gear. Their visual aesthetic relied on matching, skin-tight green wetsuits complete with protective underwater goggles, heavy rubber flippers, and integrated oxygen tanks, projecting a distinct image of mid-century industrial exploration against the dark blue void of the deep ocean. The operators of this elite maritime rescue team demonstrated a highly synchronized suite of peak-human swimming athletic traits, survival instincts, and industrial-era diving technology during their debut underwater encounter. They exhibited Dane Dorrance's supreme leadership and aquatic navigation skills, allowing the team to safely maneuver through treacherous rip currents and coordinate defensive formations in zero-visibility water. For defense, they utilized Biff Bailey's massive physical strength and heavy-duty diving conditioning, enabling him to manually shift underwater debris and withstand severe oceanic pressure changes during deep-sea combat. They displayed Judy Walton's fearless acrobatic agility and tactical observation, which provided critical battlefield tracking to spot incoming apex predators before they could strike from the dark. Their offensive and defensive capabilities were anchored by Nicky Walton's youthful speed and resourcefulness, allowing the squad to rapidly secure heavy salvage lines and manipulate specialized mechanical tools under water. Some members also demonstrated advanced demolition resourcefulness, utilizing basic field tools and floating naval ordnance to construct improvised explosives on the fly. Beyond physical combat, the group showed high-level psychological resilience and cooperative puzzle-solving, leveraging their shared mastery of Scuba equipment to outlast immense aquatic threats and safely navigate unstable subterranean reef networks before oxygen deprivation could set in.
