Sergeant Major Tambul
Sergeant Major Tambul was an officer in the Sudanese military fighting in the Sahara in World War II against the German and Italian forces. His troops were killed in a battle against Italian soldiers. Only Tambul survived. He took an Italian soldier named Giuseppe prisoner, and forced him to carry his things. The two wandered the desert before encountering Sergeant Joe Gunn and Captain Halliday's group, which Tambul joined up with. After some debate, so did Giuseppe.
During the journey, the group captured a German pilot named Captain von Schletow. A staunch racist, von Schletow's instant dislike of Tambul resulted in tension between the two that lasted the duration of von Schletow's captivity.
Since he knew the area, Tambul guided the Americans and British to the well at Hassan Barani, but they found it was empty, so Tambul then took them to the well at Bir Acroma, which was mostly empty but did provide some water. Tambul helped defend Bir Acroma when Afrika Korps led by Major von Falken attacked, intending to take the well water for themselves. When von Schletow killed Giuseppe and escaped during one of the skirmishes, Tambul pursued and killed the escaping German. As he attempted to run back to the Allied lines, he was felled by German gunfire and killed.
