Biography
Origin
Tasmia Mallor was a female Talokites from the planet Talok VIII in the 30th century. (Adventure Comics v1 #365)
She was in a mission in space and after completion she headed back to her homeworld where she narrowly missed being shot down by her own people who had become war-like aggressive race in this time. Shadow Lass looked to find out who turned her people against her and joined forces with the Legion of Super-Heroes. She came to serve as a guide to the Legionnaires as they performed a covert drop on Talok VIII. uring their mission, she actively used her shadow-casting powers to conceal Legionnaires from Czarnoid forces, plunging entire areas into darkness to disrupt enemy vision and movements. When the Legion was captured, she freed several members by cloaking their cells in total blackness, allowing stealthy escapes. Her control of shadows proved essential in turning the tide of battle against her planet’s invaders. (Adventure Comics v1 #365) Tasmia officially joined the Legion. She took part in combat training and accompanied the team on a mission where she blanketed a battlefield in impenetrable darkness, giving her allies the upper hand against an overwhelming enemy force. During one skirmish, she extended her shadows to disarm opponents, covering their weapons and rendering them useless. She also partnered with Mon-El and Ultra Boy in coordinated strikes, showing her ability to adapt her powers for both offense and team strategy. (Adventure Comics v1 #367)
With Ultra Boy absent on a mission Mon-El called a meeting of the Legion consisting of Dream Girl, Shadow Lass, Element Lad and Lightning Lad. The Legion computer alerted the team that one of them was an impostor, but before it could reveal who it was blown up through sabotage. Before the team could determine who the impostor was an alert went out that the criminal Sunburst was robbing the Metropolis Mint. When confronted Sunburst blasted the team with solar energy, knocking Mon-El for a loop. Lightning Lad and Element Lad both targeted the criminal with their powers, but missed, striking the mint and cracking it open. Shadow Lass blinded Sunburst with her shadow casting, allowing the revived Mon-El to knock out the criminal with one punch. The team started arguing about who was the imposter, with Mon-El being suspected because Sunburst’s powers had harmed him, but he replied that he had not taken his daily serum that gave him immunity to lead and red solar energy. Accusals fell on Element Lad and Lightning lad for striking the mint instead of Sunburst, but Mon-El told the team to stop arguing and pulled off 'Shadow Lass' mask, revealing her as the criminal Uli Algor. Mon-El said Sunburst’s powers would have made the real Shadow Lass powerless, and Uli confessed, saying she had taken Shadow Lass’ place and conspired with Sunburst, hoping that by defeating him she’d prove herself as a genuine Legionnaire. She then intended to steal all of the Legion’s secrets and help her partner in crime escape prison. Uli led the Legion to Shadow Lass, who was momentarily jealous that Mon-El could have mistaken someone else for her, but he immediately reassured her that the imposter did not hold a candle to her. (Action Comics v1 #378)
Shadow Lass joined the Legion in a large-scale battle against the Fatal Five. She concentrated her powers to blind Validus by surrounding his head in total shadow, disrupting his destructive energy bursts. Later, she provided cover for Brainiac 5 as he constructed a counterweapon, keeping the battlefield cloaked in darkness to shield the team from enemy targeting. Her actions were pivotal in neutralizing parts of the Fatal Five’s assault and ensuring that her teammates could coordinate countermeasures. (Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes v1 #202)
Reboot
She had been raised on Talok VIII as the heir to the Shadow Champion mantle, and she immediately demonstrated her mastery of darkness manipulation by casting a dense field of impenetrable shadow over the testing chamber—momentarily blinding other hopefuls and revealing her raw potential. Though curt and reserved, she completed demonstrations of solid shadow construct creation, fashioning a shield and taking defensive stances even while her ring’s gravity field faltered. Under the code name Umbra, she took part in the try-outs to join the Legion of Super-Heroes. The Legion leadership granted her membership despite her aloof demeanor. (Legionnaires v1 #48)
Umbra joined a patrol to confront rejected applicants attacking the Legion’s Earth outpost. She manifested fighting prowess—engulfing four rivals in solid darkness, isolating each in personal shadow pockets, and neutralizing them without lethality. She phased across battle lines using darkfields to obscure opponents’ vision, coordinating with Sensor and Magno telepathically, and ultimately freed hostages in one sweep. Both issues emphasized her independence, focus, and mastery of shadow, as well as a growing friction with cheerful teammates who misread her silent intensity. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #64)
Threeboot
Post-Infinite Crisis
She arrived on Legion Earth and immediately helped rescue Mon‑El from the Phantom Zone prison. She phased through the Zone’s steel coffin to break Mon-El free, then held open the Zone gateway psychically while Phantom Girl and Lightning Lass escorted him out. (Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds v1 #1) Shadow Lass became instrumental in the battle aboard the Conquer World structure orbiting Metropolis. She phased into sealed security blocks to unlock prison cells, projected darkfields to cloak invading Legionnaires from sight, and anchored telepathic linkages between the three Legions to coordinate a multi-dimensional assault. Though preferring the shadows, her contributions in those issues preserved lives and enabled strategic advantage during the assault on Superboy‑Prime’s forces. (Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds v1 #2)
Post-Rebirth
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
Shadow Lass appeared unexpectedly with other Legionnaires, emerging through a future time-gate into present-day Metropolis during Unity Day. She surveyed the gathering crowd invisibly before mentally projecting leadership cues to secure traffic flow and minimize panic. She verified identities telepathically—confirming Jon Kent’s status as future Legion founder—and relayed subtle emotional cues to fellow Legion members to maintain composure. (Superman v5 #14) She later assisted during the Rogol Zaar fallout. Though vocal teammates met journalists and diplomats, Shadow Lass operated quietly in the background—deploying localized shadow zones to protect bystanders from radiation flare and guiding Katrina civilians to safe corridors unseen. When illusions surfaced—Projectra disguised as a Titanian ambassador—she discerned the deception via empathic shadow-sense and alerted Saturn Girl telepathically. Her invisible defense and emotional shielding sustained calm in the chaos without any visible footprint. (Superman v5 #15)
