Biography
Shanks (Japanese: シャンクス, Hepburn: Shankusu)
Later, the crew spotted a nearby ship and prepared to attack it. As they prepared for combat, Shanks and Buggy discussed the importance of treasure, with Shanks claiming that treasure was not the only important thing in a pirate's life. During a raid on an enemy ship, while the crew retrieved a Devil Fruit: the Bara Bara no Mi, Buggy found a treasure map marking the location of a valuable underwater treasure which he did not plan to share with anyone. After the battle, the crew threw a party in celebration of their victory, and Shanks tried to invite Buggy to join them, as they had found a 'weird treasure'. That night, Shanks and Buggy talked about what they were planning to do after leaving the crew, and when Buggy claimed that he would gladly take Shanks as his crew member if it were not for his ideals, Shanks stated that he did not want to be Buggy's follower and that people with different beliefs like them should travel different paths. The two of them agreed that they would meet as enemies once they left the crew, but then Shanks told Buggy about how the Devil Fruit they had found, which he noted would sell for around 100,000,000 Beli causing Buggy to modify his scheme so he could obtain and sell the fruit. The next day, after Buggy had eaten a fake version of the Devil Fruit to trick the rest of the crew, Shanks came across him with the real fruit, forcing Buggy to hide it in his mouth. Shanks told Buggy to not steal too much food and walked away, but came back to tell him something that Roger just did, surprising Buggy, who accidentally swallowed the Devil Fruit. As Buggy was yelling at him, Shanks noticed the map Buggy had found earlier floating away, which prompted Buggy to leap into the ocean in pursuit of it. However, since Buggy could no longer swim, Shanks also leaped into the ocean in order to save him.
He and the Red Hair Pirates later chose to use a small, peaceful village in the East Blue called Foosha Village as his crew's temporary base of operations. During his year-long stay, he developed a close, lighthearted bond with a young village boy named Monkey D. Luffy, frequently teasing him about his inability to swim and refusing to take him out to sea due to the immense dangers of piracy. While celebrating at a local tavern, Shanks and his crew were suddenly confronted and insulted by a ruthless mountain bandit named Higuma, who demanded alcohol and smashed a bottle over Shanks' head. Instead of reacting with violence, Shanks calmly cleaned up the mess and laughed off the humiliation, prioritizing peace over pride. However, after the bandits returned later to assault Luffy for defending his honor, Shanks took immediate action, leading his crew to effortlessly slaughter Higuma's men in seconds before saving Luffy from a monstrous Sea King at the cost of his own left arm.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Shanks was a young human male of average height and a lean, athletic build, characterized by his signature tuft of bright red hair that fell loosely around his face. His most distinguishing facial feature was a set of three distinct parallel scars running vertically across his left eye. He possessed a relaxed, easygoing facial expression and a light stubble on his chin. His pirate attire was simple and functional, consisting of a crisp white button-up shirt left half-unbuttoned at the chest, loose-fitting brown trousers that cut off below the knee, and a pair of simple sandals. He wore a heavy, dark captain's cloak loosely draped over his shoulders, and around his waist, he tied a sash that held his single sword. Most notably, he wore a cherished, round straw hat with a red band, which he ultimately bestowed upon Luffy as a parting gift. Among the original line-up of the Four Emperors, he stood out as the smallest, most normal-sized human by far, the others being inhumanly proportioned to varying degrees. On account of his hair, he came to be known as Red-Haired Shanks (赤髪のシャンクス, Akagami no Shankusu?).
From his time in the Roger Pirates, he became acquainted with many individuals that became notable figures around the world. Among these included his fellow crewmate Buggy (バギー, Bagī).
Powers and abilities
Shanks possessed extraordinary physical capabilities, master-level swordsmanship, and a profound, unseen spiritual willpower. As an elite pirate captain, he carried a single sword at his hip and possessed the tactical skill and speed required to command a highly feared crew capable of taking down heavily armed bandits without sustaining a single scratch. He exhibited an overwhelming tier of psychological presence and spiritual energy, which he used to completely terrify and drive off a massive, predatory Sea King with nothing more than a fierce, commanding glare. His physical durability and tolerance for pain were legendary; he remained completely conscious, calm, and smiling right after having his entire left arm severed by a sea monster, showing no signs of shock while focusing entirely on comforting a crying child.
As one of the Four Emperors, Shanks stood as one of the four most powerful pirates in the world, and proof of that is his massive bounty of Beli4,048,900,000, which is the highest among the current Emperors. According to Buggy, Shanks' immense potential was visible since their days as pirate apprentices in the Roger Pirates, and thought Shanks would succeed Roger as the next Pirate King.
As a young pirate, he came to be a member of the Roger Pirates (ロジャー海賊団, Rojā Kaizoku-dan).
Later on, he came to assemble his own crew and captain his own ship where they became known as the Red Hair Pirates (赤髪海賊団, Akagami Kaizoku-dan).
