Biography

Origin

Sharon as Ms. Marvel in Thing v1 #35.

Sharon Ventura

From childhood, she always strived to please her father who never found any satisfaction as he had impossibly high standards of achievement. She went into gymnastics and entered into the competition where she achieved second place but this was a disappointment to her father. Eventually, Sharon decided to enlist in the military where she went into training at the academy. Whilst there, she was asked to indict her friend and room who was involved in a cheating scandal that threatened to tar the reputation of the pristine military school. Sharon decided to refused which led to her subsequently being expelled from the school for disobeying direct orders. The news was devastating on her relationship with her father who cut all contact with Sharon over the expulsion with him not hearing her side of events. The rift between the pair kept them apart for the next year whereupon he died. (Thing v1 #35)

She spent the next few years of her life training in a number of dangerous physical activities. She then began to earn money in such professions as movie stunt work. She joined the Thunderiders motorcycle stunt team, and stayed with them for a while. While on the team, she met Ben Grimm, the hero known as the Thing. Ben was attracted to her because she reminded him of his dream girl, Tarianna, whom he had met and lost on a planet created by the omnipotent Beyonder. Sharon became fond of Ben, but she could not return his romantic feelings towards her. While Ben was a member of the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation, Sharon met Auntie Freeze, a manager for a group of female wrestlers called the Grapplers. Freeze offered Sharon a chance to join the Grapplers if she would go through a special strength augmentation process offered by the Power Broker. Sharon agreed and went through most of the treatment, which was administered by the criminal Dr. Karl Malus. She suddenly realized that she was cheating herself by having her potential artificially increased. She escaped before Malus could inject her with the final drug of the process, which was actually a highly addictive drug that would make her dependent on Malus for the drug in the future. Sharon had actually completed the augmentation process and was now superhumanly strong. Sharon contacted Auntie Freeze and joined the Grapplers, wearing a colorful costume and calling herself Ms. Marvel. When Freeze learned that Sharon had not completed the treatment, she was forced to order the other Grapplers to capture her. Sharon escaped, with the help of the Thing. (Thing v1 #35)

During the battle, the Thing started to mutate and change. Sharon helped Ben get to a hospital, and then accidentally became involved in a battle with the hero She-Hulk. While they were fighting, the Thing left the hospital, not wanting them to see his newly mutated body. (Thing v1 #36)

Fantastic Four

Sharon later joined the Fantastic Four, and alongside the Fantastic Four she battled Diablo. (Fantastic Four v1 #307) Shortly after joining the Fantastic Four, Sharon was mutated by cosmic rays and took on strength and appearance similar to that of Ben Grimm, a.k.a. the Thing. (Fantastic Four v1 #310)

While battling the Arabic electronic terrorist, Fasaud, the Thing and Ms. Marvel were forced to take one of Fasaud's space shuttles. They defeated Fasaud in outer space, but the shuttle was badly damaged in the battle. The shuttle crash landed somewhere in the African jungles of Wakanda. During the descent to Earth, the shuttle and its occupants were bombarded with cosmic rays. After crashing, the Thing found himself further mutated, while Sharon had mutated into a form similar to that of Ben when he originally turned into the Thing. (Fantastic Four v1 #311)

She later first encountered Aron the Rogue Watcher, and battled the She-Hulk. With She-Hulk, She-Thing battled Dragon Man. (Fantastic Four v1 #321)

She-Thing was offered the chance to be human again by Doctor Doom while a then-powerless Ben Grimm chose to use one of Reed Richards' machines to revert to the Thing to save She-Thing. (Fantastic Four v1 #350)

Alongside the Fantastic Four, she battled the Secret Defenders. (Fantastic Four v1 #374) Alongside the Fantastic Four, Lyja, and the Inhumans, she battled Doctor Doom. (Fantastic Four v1 #375)

When she refused to betray her friends in the Fantastic Four to Doctor Doom, Doom spitefully mutated her into a much more monstrous form. (Fantastic Four v1 #378)

Worse, Doom remotely reversed his work curing Sharon, causing her to mutate further into a grotesque and mentally unstable state. She was placed in a stasis tube by Mr. Fantastic so that he might work on a cure for her condition. (Fantastic Four v1 #379)

After a bout of insanity, she briefly joined the Frightful Four and battered Sue Storm Richards to within inches of her life. (Fantastic Four Unlimited v1 #5)

Overview

Personality and attributes

When she gained superpowers, she was provided a suit by Auntie Freeze that resembled Ms. Marvel and she began to refer to herself as Ms. Marvel. (Thing v1 #35)

Her father was a driven and dedicated military man who was never satisfied who played the same strict rules to both his subordinates and to his own daughter. He found no satisfaction unless perfection was achieved and he had the highest of expectations. Sharon's family ties with her father suffered after her expulsion from the military academy where he refused to have any contact with her as he considered her leaving the military in such a fashion to be a great shame and disgrace. The pair never reconciled with him dying a year after he had cut his ties with his daughter. After his death, she made a vow to excel at everything without having to adhere to his strict rules and regulations. She did it as a way of proving that there were other means of self-achievement and she intentionally had done numerous dangerous and physically active professions to have her father be proud of her being an overachiever. (Thing v1 #35)

Powers and abilities

Originally, Sharon was an ordinary human but one who had pushed herself into engaging in numerous dangerous and demanding physical work including training in gymnastics. (Thing v1 #35)

After seeking out the Power Broker, she went through a procedure in order to enhance herself and give Sharon superpowers. This consisted of being treated with small doses of radiation that would raise her body's natural abilities to their highest levels. She then was to receive an injection of certain stabilising enzymes that would help her body combat possible side effects of the treatment. Sharon would then be submitted to a second course of treatment to increase her strength levels. This resulted in greatly increased strength allowing her to overpower ordinary humans and her reaction time had tripled from prior to the augmentation. (Thing v1 #35)
