History

Shikabane (Japanese: 屍, Hepburn: Corpse)

Long ago, the founder of the Kōgon Sect created a ritual that revived his daughter from the grave but instead of being a Shikabane she became a Shikabane Hime. Since that time, the monks of the sect used the same scripture to revive girls of a similar age to serve as their Shikabane Hime which were used in hunting and eliminating Shikabane.

Overview

In appearance, Shikabane tended to appear like ordinary human beings which hid their true nature. This was because in reality they were undead beings born from corpses of the deceased with their origins being traced to the circumstances of a living beings demise. Those with a particular obsession with life were known to return to life as undead creatures called Shikabane. Such beings were known to rise from their coffins and begin prowling the world where they engaged in the obsessions that consumed them in their lives. Once reborn, a Shikibane was seemingly no different in appearance from a human though those with a particular keen sense of smell were able to smell a stagnant stench from them. At any point, a Shikibane was able to transform into its true form which was a monstrous being with unique set of abilities.

It was claimed that these creatures were actually immortal which was partially true. Being undead beings, they did not suffer from the effects of old age or injuries. However, they were destroyed if their head was destroyed by a Shikabane Hime who were classed as killers of these immortals.

A Shikabane was not capable of transmitting its condition to other beings and thus were not able to seemingly turn normal humans into more of their kind. However, experiments were conducted in the implantation of Shikabane flesh being injected into humans which led to gruesome deaths for their hosts.
