History

Shinigami (Japanese: 死神, Shinigami, lit. "god(s) of death" or "death god(s)") were a race of supernatural beings that were typically invisible to the human world and were each keepers of a Death Note.

Overview

One aspect of their nature was their eyes that had the unique ability to see the names and lifespans of human beings by observing them. This was a valuable means of assisting them in their function if writing the names of a person in a Death Note. When accompanying a human, they were able to give these Shinigami Eyes (死神の目, shinigami no me) to their charge allowing them to be given this ability. However, this came at a cost of halving the lifespan of the person as the price for the eyes.

Leadership of the Shinigami was held by the King of Death who was the highest ranked member of their kind and controlled the distribution of the Death Notes.

Each of their kind were in possession of their own Death Note.

They were native to their own world that was a desolate land known as the Shinigami Realm.
