Biography

Shogo Makishima (Japanese: 槙島 聖護, Hepburn: Makishima Shōgo)

At some point, Makishima discovered that he could control his Psycho-Pass at will. He intended to take down the Sybil System which forces mankind to take their own destined lives rather than an option of free will. Makishima operated from the shadows as a mastermind behind many criminal cases investigated by the Public Safety Bureau. Among these included one which led to the demotion of Shinya Kogami from inspector when one of his allies were murdered and his body dismembered. This deteriorated Kogami's mental state to a point where the Sybil Society treated him like a criminal who remains working for them with the intention of having revenge.

Despite Makishima's murderous intent, his Crime Coefficient which was the data collected on every member of society never reached a dangerous level. He claims that this is because his mind and body does not consider his murders and other crimes 'wrong', but 'sound'; this in turn makes him immune to the Dominator weapon worn by Inspector Akane Tsunemori. During the series, Tsunemori unsuccessfully tries to prevent Makishima from killing one of her friends. Makishima tries to destroy the Sybil System by distracting the Bureau forces with chaos in the streets, but is arrested by Tsunemori after a fight with Kogami. The Sybil System offers to spare his life if he will join them; he escapes, however, loathing the way the system acts like 'gods'. Makishima tries to convince Kogami to join his planned bioterrorism to weaken Japan's economy. However, the Bureau forces manages to stop him with Kogami leaving him a major wound using a knife in combat. Makishima tries to escape from his enemies but eventually gives up when the blood loss continues and stays in an oat field. Before his death, Makishima ask Kogami if he will replace his role but Kogami rejects him and shoots him in the head.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Shogo Makishima was a Japanese male of average height with a slender but fit build who had amber-colored eyes alongside messy white hair that was held back in a ponytail.

Makishima was someone enchanted by the worst aspects of human nature with no qualms about witnessing or causing others' suffering. He has the ability to manipulate people to do his bidding, possessing both uncommon charisma and a true gift for persuasive speech. He has no compunction about dealing death to those who either stand in his way or those of whom he has grown tired, either with his own hands or through subordinates

Makishima personally states that he wants to see 'the splendor of people's souls' and outwardly disdains humanity's way of living, considering humans worthless due to their dependence on the Sibyl System. He believes his actions will alert people to examine their motives and to determine the direction of their lives based on their own will, despite the fact that he is forcing them to do so. This adamant belief extends to the point where he is willing to die by the hands of someone 'who has the will to kill'.

He believed the only truth of a person was when they acted out their true impulses. Shogo had said that he wanted to see the splendor of people's souls and showed a disdain for humanity's way of living,

His stated goal was to liberate Japanese society from the Sibyl System as he believed that it was turning its citizens into non-thinking autommatons instead of independent thinking human beings.

Makishima enjoyed reading dystopian literature, Shakespeare and had a thorough knowledge of the Christian Bible.

His ideals an motives largely followed the Philosophy of Anarchy - the lack of government oppression and the non-existence of laws outside of the laws of nature being the true state that humanity belongs to. However contrary to this Professor Joji Saiga stated that though he was close to being an anarchist himself he loved destruction far too much to actually be considered an Anarchist by the very definition of Anarchy as a state of lack of government. Though he certainly wanted to overthrow the current status quo brought about from the Sybil system his own destructive tendencies contrasted the actual theme of Anarcho-pacifism that was ubiquitous.

Furthermore Shinya Kogami profiled him as not wanting to take down the Sybil system out of a sense of justice but because Shogo likely suffered hardships in the early stages of his life, because of the fact that his Hue and PP were always pure. He claimed this most likely resulted in him not being recognized by Sibyl or anyone for that matter, which was probably the starting point for his strong desire to take down the Sibyl System as opposed to a following to the ideals of Anarchy. Shogo himself seemed to be at times conflicted about his own existence in the state of anarchy and after learning the truth of the Sybil system tossed any restraint out the window and instead took far more extreme measures to make sure that Sybil was brought to an end.

He was incredibly perceptive and able to find and mold those who had suffered under the Sybil's system seemingly omnipotent order and turn them into what the Sybil system was trying to prevent: criminals. It should be noted that he had the ability to find people with these latent killer instincts when Sybil had failed at doing just that which is a great achievement when compared to how Sybil had failed to detect any threat that these people had to their system. He had the ability to manipulate people to do his bidding and was a born evangelist that possessed both uncommon charisma and a true gift for narrative. However, Shogo was as charismatic as he was heartless, and will cause the deaths of those who either stand in his way or has grown tired of, either with his own hands or through subordinates. Even those whom he mentored personally he had no qualms about tossing to another bloodthirsty subordinate when he felt that they had been rendered 'too much like Sybil'.

Powers and abilities

Shogo Makishima was born an ordinary human being with no special inherent abilities. A curious case of his nature meant that his somatic scans were always clear that meant that he was never registered as a latent criminal by the Sibyl System. This was the case even when he was in the midst of a crime and murdered a person. In such moments, the Dominators scans did not registered any rise of his mental state thus preventing the weapon from being used.

Shogo is an excellent fighter, able to take out three armed men easily without a single scratch. As seen from his fight with Shinya, Shogo also possesses great agility and is able to reflect attacks easily and counter attack them. He is stronger than he looks, as he was able to throw Shinya across the room and crack his skull with one kick alone.

He was adept at track and field, swimming, and martial arts.

Shogo has an old fashioned style razor he carries around with him most of the time. He first uses it to murder Yuki. He then uses it to kill Kudama Nobuaki and gouge his eyes out before cutting off his fingers. He has also attempted to murder Shinya with it as well.
