Biography

Shuichi Kagaya (Japanese: 加 賀 谷 修 一, Hepburn: Kagaya Shūichi)

Shuichi was speaking with the principal, turning down the principal recommendation. He was living a normal school life. Later Mifune came to him to tell him that she was chosen to receive the principal recommendation. She realized Shuichi had turned the offer, but he told Mifune that she earned it herself. Later while playing on his phone, due to his great smell, he smelled a fire and went to see. As he smelled a girl inside, he thought it won't have enough time to call for help, so he transformed into a dog mascot. He entered the building and broke the wall to save the girl and left her on the ground. On the next day, he realized he lost his phone and arriving at school he smelled the girl he saved, who was holding his phone. She saw him transforming into a monster and wanted to speak with him. At the school roof, he tried to deny he was a monster, but the girl, Clair, pushed him down from the roof. While falling he transformed and then jumped back on the roof. She then started questioning him about what he was threatening she will reveal his secret. But Shuichi had no idea, and told her, he just transformed one day. On the way to her home, she introduced herself and showed him a coin she found, but Shuichi did not know anything about it. In her apartment, she explained she was looking for her sister, who was a monster like him.

When Shuichi Kagaya first revealed his monstrous transformation to Claire Aoki inside her apartment, his initial activities were dominated by hesitation and fear. Despite his monstrous canine-like body, he displayed restraint, uncertain of both his own strength and of Claire’s intentions. The confrontation escalated quickly when an intruder named Hikawa, also a transformed human, invaded the apartment intent on killing Claire. Shuichi reacted instinctively to protect her, transforming into his monstrous form in front of Claire for the first time and engaging Hikawa in combat. His early movements showed his lack of experience—his strikes were unrefined, his defenses clumsy—but his raw power was enough to prevent Hikawa from immediately overwhelming them. He endured significant physical damage during this clash, but his focus remained on shielding Claire rather than winning outright. As the battle in Claire’s apartment intensified, Shuichi began to uncover the true potential of his monstrous form. His resilience became apparent as he withstood attacks that would have incapacitated a normal human. Though outmatched by Hikawa’s combat experience, Shuichi repeatedly threw himself between Claire and danger, allowing her to exploit openings against their opponent. His actions showed a growing willingness to rely on Claire, who discovered the zipper on his back that allowed her to enter his monstrous body. Shuichi, though confused by the nature of his transformation, allowed Claire inside, an act that shifted the battle entirely. With her inside guiding his movements, Shuichi’s actions became sharper, his attacks more coordinated, and his monstrous body functioned as a weapon under Claire’s direction.

Once Claire synchronized with Shuichi by entering his body, his actions in combat became both more decisive and more violent. Claire directed his strength into focused assaults, turning his previously clumsy strikes into effective, destructive blows. Shuichi’s monstrous body demonstrated agility and strength far beyond human limits, delivering crushing attacks that forced Hikawa onto the defensive. Shuichi himself remained conscious inside the fusion, horrified by both the sensation of Claire’s presence and the violence his body was now capable of unleashing. Still, he prioritized Claire’s survival, allowing her full control of his movements and pushing through pain that would have crippled an ordinary fighter. His willingness to endure damage while executing Claire’s strategies marked a turning point in his activities, as he began to accept the symbiotic role his transformation forced on him. During the later stages of the battle, Shuichi’s actions became more desperate as Hikawa escalated her assault. His monstrous body absorbed tremendous punishment, but Shuichi refused to retreat, driven by the knowledge that Claire’s survival depended entirely on him. He grappled with Hikawa in close quarters, using brute force to restrain her despite her superior combat skill. This allowed Claire to deliver precise, lethal strikes through his monstrous claws. Shuichi’s activity during this stage demonstrated his adaptability—though inexperienced, he adjusted quickly to the rhythm of fighting with Claire inside him. His reliance on instinct and Claire’s tactical sense formed the foundation of his effectiveness, showing that his monstrous form was not merely a weapon of brute force, but one that required partnership to unleash its true potential.

Whilst leaving, he went to a nearby scrapyard where he was approached with the last survivor of the Madoka gang who wanted revenge for the death of his friends. He intended to kill Clair as he blamed her for the fire that killed all his fellow gang members. Shuichi then transformed to fight the swordsman alone as he refused to put Clair in danger by calling her into the matter. He managed to defeat his foe and then demanded to know if his friend Abukawa was part of their gang. He then wanted to know how they convinced Abukawa to join them as they had to had coerced him as he remembered his friend for being a kind person. However, the swordsman stated that Shuichi clearly did not know his friend as he was a loyal member of Madoka's gang and had died in the blaze that killed its members. This shocked Shuichi who got a call from Clair where she became concerned after hearing the swordsman's voice over the phone. Shuichi then put her at ease and told her not to worry as he was handling the matter. The swordsman attempted to get away to continue his revenge against Clair but Shuichi pulled out his monster form's gun and shot the gang member.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Shuichi Kagaya was a slender young boy of average height with short black-brown hair who sometimes wore glasses. Following his encounter with Elena, he gained a scar across his neck. In his monster form, he turned into a dog mascot costume with light brown hair color and top right face being darker brown. He had a gun that was holstered by his side along with a zip on his back which could be opened and a person can enter and take control of him.

After gaining his transformation, he began to feel conflicted and incredibly frightened of his new reality. This led to him soon feeling detached from life where he tried to cling to a sense of normalcy with cynicism.

As disclosed by the Alien, Shuichi's monster form reflects his inner desires and how he is empty in the inside in order for someone else to "fill him" and make up for his own weaknesses, a key part in Shuichi's co-dependent relationship with Claire. Over time, he becomes much colder, more serious and outgoing, accepting his ability and trying to understand and improve it. While he maintains his kindness and altruism, he steadily begins to forget his own well-being and self-worth, adopting a self-sacrificial mindset.

Upon meeting Clair, he felt terrified of the lengths she was willing to go in her quest to learn more about the monsters along her capacity to murder with seemingly any lack of restraint much in contrast to his still latent sense of humanity. After finding out he was terrified of his monster form, Clair began to care much more for him with this being a feeling that was mutual after he understood her motivations. Over time, he became close to Clair Aoki as he came to see that the two were one person. Thus, he did not want her to shoulder the burden of their actions and wanted to better protect her. As a result, he engaged in acts that went against his nature so that he could protect Clair. In one case, he killed one of the Madoka gang survivors after learning of the man's desire to get revenge against Clair.

Powers and abilities

Originally, Shuichi Kagaya was an ordinary human being with no special powers though he was noted for his academic intelligence as he got a recommendation for university.

He later gained the ability to attain a monster form which was given to him by the Alien at Elena's request. Upon transforming, he gained a greater degree of strength, agility, and endurance along with a very good sense of smell.

By his side, there was a holster that had a gun that was seemingly a model weapon. However, it was an actual weapon that he could fire at a target with the bullets being powerful. In fact, it was even able to deal damage to powerful monster forms though some were able to resist its shots. The weapon was only ever present within his monster form and disappeared if he resumed his human shape.

At the back of his monster forms neck was a zipper that could open him up like a suit with nothing inside. This allowed a person to step inside and effectively pilot him as a host body. The inside of the 'suit' was covered in flesh but could perfectly fit a person inside. Once inside, the host was able to operate Shuichi's body and even override some of his actions depending on their strength of will. It took sometime to get used to the 'suit' though some users were shown to learn to use them quickly. Within the suit, the pilot was able to sense some of Shuichi's feelings and similarly he could sense some of their emotions as well. Shuichi could force a transformation back into his human form which caused the person inside to manifest outside as he turned back to normal.

It was shown that in certain extreme circumstances that Shuichi was capable of merging with the host entirely. This led to his body moulding around their form giving them a vastly different appearance. In this state, the pair shared thoughts and memories completely where they could end up in a berserker state until one of them snaps the other out of it.
