History

The Silurians were a race of humanoid reptiles that were native to the planet Earth. Their species evolved millions of years ago where they became the dominant race on the planet and ruled the surface. Early mankind were noted for being little more than apes during this period in history. In this time, early humans were known to raid Silurian crop fields leading to the reptilians using a virus to cull the population. (Episode: Doctor Who and the Silurians) The Silurians were also afflicted by the plagues of the red leech. (Episode: The Crimson Horror)

A coming catastrophe was detected by the Silurian civilization when they registered a small planet approaching the Earth. Their calculations indicated that it would destroy out the atmosphere and thus destroy all life. To save themselves, they constructed underground hibernation facilities to suspended their lives and wait until the atmosphere returned where they intended on reclaiming the surface. (Episode: Doctor Who and the Silurians)

Another attempt was the creation of the Ark where thousands of their kind went into hibernation sleep and placed a number of the native dinosaurs into the craft. It launched into space where during its journey it encountered an interstellar pirate named Solomon. He had discovered the ship contained dinosaurs that he desired but he had no need for the Silurian crew who were sleeping. Thus, he decided to remove the Silurians from hibernation and jettisoned them from the Ark thus killing the entire crew. (Episode: Dinosaurs on a Spaceship)

The Silurians sealed themselves in their underground hibernation units. However, they were unaware the dangerous planetoid that they predicted would draw away the atmosphere was instead drawn into Earth's orbit and became the Moon. As a result, the Silurians were never revived, as the atmosphere was not drawn away for it to return to the planet. (Episode: Doctor Who and the Silurians)

Overview

The species were referred to by the designation as Homo Reptilia. (Episode: The Hungry Earth) It was noted that they were a reptilian species that operated in a distinct environmental conditions as they thrived living in extreme heat,. (Episode: Doctor Who and the Silurians)

One group of Silurians had long fingers and three webbed toes on each foot, and their mouths were small and sucker-like. The most noticeable feature of these Silurians were their three eyes. Their main eyes were bright yellow with cat-like pupils, while their third eye was red and high on the forehead, surrounded by a fluted bone structure whilst having rectangular external ears. They were active creatures who spoke quickly in deep voices. (Episode: Doctor Who and the Silurians) Another group had stockier builds, brown skin, suckers on the tips of their fingers, smaller mouths, ornate, curving spikes around their heads and the third eye on top. The third eye would glow along with their speech, but was not used in attack. They were also slower and spoke in a higher-pitched voice. (Episode: Warriors of the Deep)

They had a greater lung capacity than a human. (Episode: Deep Breath)

The Silurians also employed their third eye in less destructive tasks, such as activating their technology, opening passageways or creating force fields to trap prisoners. (Episode: Doctor Who and the Silurians)

The Silurians were also distantly related to the Sea Devils. (Episode: The Sea Devils)

Some members of their kind were dismissive of humanity and scornful of the species as being little more than apes. (Episode: Doctor Who and the Silurians)

The Silurians were generally a peaceful race. Their highest laws forbade outright warfare except for defence. (Episode: Warriors of the Deep)

Technologically, their civilization grew into a highly advanced society that was more sophisticated than modern age humanity. Their science was said to be capable of creating cities in areas that were uninhabitable to mankind. Silurians were able to create hibernation systems that could keep their kind in suspended animation for millions of years. (Episode: Doctor Who and the Silurians)

Their science allowed them to create specially formed bacteria that developed into a plague that could infect and kill humans. (Episode: Doctor Who and the Silurians)

They used Silurian battlecruisers, which were organic in structure, for transportation and offensive purposes. (Episode: Warriors of the Deep)

They had developed space travel capabilities where they were able to create massive Arks that contained thousands of hibernation pods for a crew and was large enough to hold an ecosystem with animals. (Episode: Dinosaurs on a Spaceship)
