Biography

Origin

Sin

Sin was introduced to Black Canary when Canary made a deal with Lady Shiva. They would switch lives for a year, in which Dinah would train as Lady Shiva had done, while Shiva herself took her position with Oracle and the Birds of Prey. During Dinah's training, she arrived at a village in Asia, which was ruled by a martial arts master known simply as Mother. Dinah was allowed to be trained by the cruel matriarch, though it often came as horrible mental and physical abuse.

While there, Dinah met a little girl dubbed Sin. Sin was being groomed to become the next Lady Shiva, following the death of the current one. Sin and Dinah developed an immediate relationship that bordered on sisterly or mother/daughter. When Dinah grew tired of Mother and her training, she decided to leave, and took Sin with her. Mother attempted to stop her, but was no match for Black Canary.

Returning to Metropolis with Sin, Dinah introduced Sin to her friends in the Birds of Prey, who all took a shine to the girl. They began to teach her the wonders of the western world and educate her in English and name-calling (she on occasion addressed Helena as "Spinster"). Over time however, Dinah slowly began to question her life as member of the Birds of Prey, now that she had a child to care for. After several missions, she decided to leave the team so as to raise Sin full-time. This would prove difficult however, after Dinah once again joined the Justice League.

Later, the League of Assassins attempted to kidnap Sin, seeing the martial arts prodigy as a messiah that could unite their splintered and then leaderless group. In an attempt to save Sin from the League, Green Arrow faked the child's death. Though the decision pained him, he concealed the truth from Dinah so that her grief would be real and convincing to their enemies. Dinah later learned of her foster daughter's survival.

Currently, Sin lives in a secluded monastery, being kept safe from the League of Assassins and others who would exploit her intuitive gift for the martial arts. Black Canary makes occasional trips to visit her, still playing the role of mother part-time.

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

In other media

Television

  • In Arrow, Sin appeared in the setting of the live-action television series set in the Arrowverse where she was portrayed by actress Bex Taylor-Klaus. Cindy Simone was a teenage Caucasian girl who lived in the Glades in Starling City. When she was only a toddler, her mother died of cancer, leaving her father to raise her. On May 10, 2008, Cindy went to a sports game with her father, where he took a photo of her that he kept his wallet. The following year when Cindy was 12 years old, her father was shot down while flying a plane over Lian Yu, leaving her an orphan. After the Undertaking, Sin was attacked by a group of men attempting to harass her, but was rescued by the Canary. Afterwards, Sin became the female vigilante's confidant, leading to Roy Harper being pointed in her direction when looking for the Canary. When asked about her, Sin led Roy to the Canary's hideout and knocked him out. When Roy woke up, Sin looked on as he was questioned by the Canary, but she let him go when The Canary assured her that Roy was harmless. Sometime later, Sin ate breakfast together with Sara as they reflected on their families. She later encountered Roy again and met Thea Queen, and she mentioned to him how Thea didn't know about him being The Arrow's sidekick. When "the Mayor" attacked the event they were at, Sin was wounded and was saved by Roy and Thea. As she was recuperating at a hospital, she was looked over by Roy and Thea. She woke up later and told Roy that, because he saved her, she would keep his secret. She commented on how Roy was an idiot, and Thea wholeheartedly agreed, leading to Sin admitting she had begun to like Thea. Not long after this, Sin told Roy and Thea of her friend, Max Stanton, who had gone missing for a week. She asked Roy if he knew someone that could help, but Thea commented that Roy could, and the three of them joined in on a search.
