Sister Night

Sister Night is a female television character who features in Watchmen.

Biography

Angela Abar was a female human born on January 15, 1976 in Vietnam to Marcus Abar and Elise Abar two years after the country was admitted into the Union as the 51st State of America. As a young child, she was known to had attempted to rent movies that were too mature for her age. On June 1987, she would pick the black mask movie Sister Night to watch on the 16th anniversary of the Victory in Vietnam Day. She brought it to her father to show but he returned it and told her that people who wore masks were dangerous and should be feared. This saw Angela walking back to return the movie when she spotted a Vietnamese puppeteer hand a man on a bicycle a backpack. The man then went towards a group of U.S. Army soldiers where he then detonated a hidden bomb to kill all Americans at the scene. This saw the death of both of her parents that were nearby the scene with Angela witnessing their deaths as she was knocked down by the blast. Following the bombing, Angela spoke of the incident. Her testimony helped the Vietnamese police track down the terrorist responsible. Angela would later be taken in with other orphans, and was the only black child - and the only one of American heritage - amongst them. A short time after the incident, Angela was taken out of the orphanage to speak to Saigon Police Department officers Jan and Roy who needed Angela to identify the bomber. Angela told them he was the man - recognizing him as the puppeteer - and then asked if she could stay and listen as he was executed. Officer Jan saw that Angela was a strong willed girl and handed her a Saigon Police Badge and told Angela to come find her when she got older. It was this moment that sparked her to become a police officer. Angela would hold onto the badge as a memento alongside the Sister Night VHS tape.

Some time later after this, Angela Abar would be met by an elderly African-American woman at the girls home. This woman revealed to the young Angela that she was in fact Marcus' mother and Angela's grandmother, June Abar, who was still alive and whom Angela didn't know of. June would bring Angela to a Burgers 'N' Borscht restaurant where she revealed that she and Marcus were estranged due to his enlisting in the US Army. Marcus stayed in Vietnam after the war ended and at this point lost contact with June and never informed her that he had married or had a child. This is why June took so long to come for Angela, due to receiving a letter in the mail of his death. They also talked about Angela's interests to which she showed June the Sister Night VHS. Angela mentioned to her grandmother that Marcus disproved of the movie due to Sister Night wearing a mask and his belief that those in masks were dangerous. This prompted June to tell her that Marcus had a bad attitude toward masks due to a bad experience with someone in a mask. It was then June noted that Angela was fond of the movie due to a lack of African American representation in local media and environment and thus told Angela of her intentions to take her back home to Tulsa, where she and her grandfather (whom she chose not to mention due to long separating from him) were originally from. While entering a cab to go to the airport, June began to have a heart attack and died on the spot. Angela watched her grandmother die and thus was left an orphan once again and remained in Vietnam. After graduating from Anh Linh High School in 1994, Angela continued to remain in Vietnam and decided to become a police officer for the Saigon Police Department.

On the night of VVN Day in June 2009, a man dressed as and wearing a mask of Doctor Manhattan offered Angela a drink and company in the bar. After some demonstration of his precognitive abilities, Angela allowed the man to sit. The man claimed to be Jon Osterman, Doctor Manhattan himself, in reality, wearing a plastic mask of his face to avoid being recognized, who had come to meet her because the timeline insisted that the two fall in love. She initially dismissed this, and while she didn't outright believe him at first, she allowed him to stay for her amusement. As he told her outlandish tales about paradises on Europa, witnessing sex from a closet, and their relationship lasting ten years, despite her telling him to leave at one point, all before a tragic end, and even demonstrated his powers for her, she became more and more entertained and engaged in the man. The tipping point seemed to be when Jon created an egg in his hand, claiming he'd transferred his power to it, and if she ate it, she could theoretically walk on water. By the end of the night, she had agreed to a date with him a few days later, beginning the ten happy years Jon prophesied. Soon, Angela realized that in order for their relationship to work, they would have to disguise Jon permanently. The two traveled to the morgue at Angela's police station and looked at several bodies of men without known families to miss them. After much consideration, they settled on the appearance of a man named Calvin Jelani, and Angela and Jon properly became a couple. The early days of their relationship were very happy and sweet, but soon turned sour when Angela began to notice Jon being more distracted, his perception of time ensuring he would never be in a single place in his head. Unsatisfied and fearing that the happiest time in her life would soon be over, Angela yelled at Jon and told him to focus, something he was unable to do. Sensing her distress, Jon told her he needed her to tell him to leave to preserve the timeline, which she did reluctantly. Upon him doing so, she burst into tears, assuming she'd ended a nearly perfect relationship that neither of them felt was ready to end.

Overview

Personality and attributes

At the Tulsa Police Department, she came to adopt the name of Sister Night when she worked as a masked vigilante police officer. As Sister Night, Angela dresses in a very similar fashion to Sister Night of the black mask film she cherished as a child. However, she wears a black hood - likely part of the black longcoat - which gives her the appearance of a nun. She wears a white shirt, black trousers, and long black boots with heels. Her eyes are concealed by black spray paint and mouth hidden by a black mask. Her Tulsa Police Badge was worn on the side of her belt.

Unknown to her, her paternal grandfather was Will Reeves who actually operated as one of the first masked vigilantes who went by the name of Hooded Justice.

Powers and abilities

Angela was born an ordinary human being with no special powers though she underwent intensive training to become a police officer. Her years in law enforcement led to her becoming a master martial artist.
