Biography
Sally Blevins
Just like many other mutants, Sally Blevins first manifested her powers during puberty at a time of great stress; in her case it was when she had to protect herself from her abusive father, Bill. After Bill Blevins had violently attacked Sally’s mother, Matilda, for letting Sally wear some pearls, which he thought was not appropriate, he then turned his rage to his daughter. However, after his first punch, both Sally and her father were surprised to find that he could not touch her, his fists just bounced right off. That, and seeing her mother badly injured gave a young Sally the strength she needed to frighten her narrow-minded father away. When Sally tried to help her mother get to a doctor, though, she found that she could not. Because of her powers, Sally's mother kept slipping out of her grip. Matilda died in front of Sally, leaving her all by herself. (X-Factor v1 #16)
Skids emerged amid chaos as a young mutant refugee among the sewer-dwelling Morlocks. Sally Blevins had fled child abuse and homelessness, living in underground tunnels when Masque attempted to alter her physical form. Her power unexpectedly activated during his assault, enveloping her body in a translucent field that repelled his touch and prevented the transformation. As X‑Factor intervened after tracking mutant activity, Skids was discovered alongside other rogue mutants. Though frightened, she instinctively projected her protective barrier to shield herself and others from capture. During the rescue operation, Slade Wilson’s Freedom Force stormed the area, and Skids extended her force field outward to protect Rusty Collins and herself from stun blasts and physical strikes. Her barrier’s frictionless surface allowed her and Rusty to slide past advancing attackers, making escape possible through narrow subway corridors. X‑Factor’s members including Bobby Drake, Jean Grey, Scott Summers, Warren Worthington, and Henry McCoy arrived to evacuate her and other wards. Despite her anxiety, Skids remained calm once protected, allowing Cyclops and Jean to guide her away while continuing to project her shield under psychic pressure. She slipped silently into X‑Factor’s vehicle, still unsure whether she would be welcomed or rejected, but determined not to return to the tunnels. (X-Factor v1 #7)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Skids was a female human mutant of American origin, with distinct physical features shaped by survival in harsh environments. She stood approximately 5′4″ with a lithe frame that hinted at both youth and malnourishment. Her skin was fair with slight pallor, marred by bruises and faint scars—especially on her arms and cheeks—that spoke of abuse and life in the sewers. Her hair was blonde, cut short and uneven, often appearing damp or tangled. Her eyes were bright blue, wide and wary, reflecting mistrust and acute awareness. During her first appearance, she wore tattered casual clothing: a loose‑fitting shirt layered over a graphic tee and jeans rolled at the ankles, both worn and dusty. She wore no costume or insignia—just somber attire that blended into subway shadows. When she projected her force field, the barrier appeared as a translucent, blue-tinged dome with a glossy sheen, sliding smoothly as she moved. (X-Factor v1 #7)
Skids’s core personality traits were immediately evident: guarded resilience, protective instinct, and reluctant trust. She spoke only when pressed, whispering her name and origin with hesitation, revealing trauma without seeking pity. When Rusty Collins was threatened, she extended her force field instinctively, showing impulsive protectiveness toward friends or defenseless others. Although her words were few, they carried weight—she avoided eye contact yet did not flinch when challenged by authority figures like Cyclops. She stopped showing fear only after her powers activated and she felt control over her barrier. Though silent, she displayed empathy: when the Morlocks were threatened, she made room for others under her shield even before focusing on self-preservation. Her initial reaction to rescue was cautious acceptance rather than relief—evident in her body language and limited dialogue. Her trust in people remained fragile, but she did not reject kindness outright. (X-Factor v1 #7)
Powers and abilities
Sally Blevins is a mutant with power over a semipermeable personal protective deflection field. It provides nearly total protection from all attacks except those of insufficient force, like gas. Her force field disperses energy assaults, reflects kinetic impact off itself, and negates friction making it impossible to hold on to her. Skids cannot be grabbed or entangled when using her powers. This also makes her immune to Masque's powers, as he cannot touch her. (X-Factor v1 #16)
Notes
- Skids was created by Louise Simonson and Jackson Guice where she made her first appearance in X-Factor v1 #7 (August, 1986).
