History
Sleeves was the terminology given to organically grown bodies that could be used to house a consciousness. Its development came upon humanity's discovery of the Elder ruins located on Harlan's World leading to contact with alien life. The explorers expedition came to examine the seemingly abandoned world and used the technology there to develop Cortical Stacks.
Overview
In appearance, Sleeves were human bodies that were grown and awaited implantation of a consciousness into a new body.
Sleeves were outfitted with an Online Network Interface (ONI) device which was inserted into the body and controlled from either a wristband, tablet or watch. The interface allowed the user to upload data, look through pictures or videos, take recordings and access AI directories.
Certain sleeves could be programmed with a subconscious survival instinct whereby the body reacted to save itself even if the person was unconscious.
As long as the stack was undamaged, the mind within it could survive death and be placed within a new sleeve. A stack that was destroyed had the consciousness within it suffering 'real death' which was permanent.
A process called 'double sleeving' whereby a copy of an existing person operated in another sleeve was considered a crime that was punishable by real death.
