Biography
Smoker (Japanese: スモーカー, Hepburn: Sumōkā) was a male human born in the Grand Line 36 years ago. It was shown that he knew of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger as he described Roger smiling right before his demise 24 years ago, and still remembered it to this day. At some point, he joined the Marines at the same time as Hina and Hound. However, Hina had to help Smoker before in situations where he was almost expelled from the Marines. Smoker managed to acquire the rank of Marine Captain, and was charged with the protection of Loguetown, the city in which the Pirate King was born and executed.
Tasked with maintaining strict law and order at the final gateway to the Grand Line, he established a flawless record by successfully capturing and arresting every single pirate who attempted to pass through his territory. While relaxing inside the local Marine station, Smoker was alerted by a subordinate that Master Chief Petty Officer Tashigi had gone to an arms shop alone to retrieve her sword. Frustrated by her lack of punctuality and declaring her to be a constant shame to the Marines, he ordered his men to find and retrieve her immediately, shortly after receiving fresh eyewitness intelligence indicating that a dangerous influx of new pirates had just arrived in the town.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Smoker was a tall, heavily muscular human male who exuded a rugged, aggressive, and fiercely intimidating military presence. He possessed short, spiked white hair and sharp, narrow eyes that gave him a constantly intense and focused expression. His most definitive lifestyle feature was his heavy smoking habit, which involved constantly keeping two lit cigars in his mouth simultaneously, causing a persistent cloud of smoke to drift around his face. He wore a heavy, specialized Marine captain's jacket that was left completely unzipped down the center to expose his muscular bare chest, accented by a thick fur-lined collar and a row of specialized cigar ammunition slots sewn across the right side of his chest. His attire was completed by heavy dark gloves, dark trousers tucked into sturdy combat boots, and a massive jitte weapon strapped securely across his back. The jacket bears the kanji for 'justice' (正義, Seigi?) written on the back of it. Many cigars are strapped to the jacket. He carried a Seastone-tipped jitte as his weapon.
Smoker was a seasoned Marine soldier, infamous among his organization for his loose cannon tendencies and obstinate, rebellious attitude towards even his superiors. Smoker, however, was above all, an honorable man who values the difference between right and wrong above all else. This could first be seen at the end of the Alabasta Saga, when Smoker discovered that the superiors intended to cover up the incident and give the credit for Crocodile's capture to him and Tashigi, Smoker was extremely angered and disgusted by such an immoral action, as the true perpetrators were the Straw Hats and he strongly refused to take credit for other people's achievements, even if they were pirates, especially since Tashigi was crying in frustration at not being able to do anything at that time. Even something beneficial to his reputation, such as an award or promotion, will cause Smoker to lash out against the top brass, especially if he feels like he did not earn it. However, Smoker does show interest in climbing up the ranks, if only to widen his authority to act freely.
Powers and abilities
Smoker possessed immense physical prowess and tactical authority derived from his high-ranking position as a seasoned Marine captain. He was a master of close-quarters combat, demonstrating the precise martial skill required to wield a giant, specialized iron jitte to physically subdue and pin down dangerous outlaws with brutal efficiency.
Smoker had eaten the Moku Moku Devil Fruit (モクモクの実 , Smoke Smoke/Plume Plume fruit) that allowed him to control any smoke around him; he can also change part or all of his body into smoke at will, like other Logia-type Devil fruit powers. He could also manipulate the smoke to make it soft or hard, allowing him to hold and constrict objects or people within it, and is able to extend his height using a smoke tail to support his partial-body. Having consumed a mysterious Logia-type Devil Fruit, he wielded the absolute supernatural power to manipulate, generate, and completely transform his entire physical body into intangible, living white smoke. This mystical anatomy rendered him entirely immune to conventional physical attacks, allowing him to pass safely through objects, expand his reach across large distances, and physically restrain or suffocate multiple enemies simultaneously by trapping them inside dense, inescapable vapor currents.
Among the techniques known to him included:
- White Out (ホワイト・アウト, Howaito Auto?) :
- White Blow (ホワイト・ブロー, Howaito Burō?) :
- White Snake (ホワイトスネーク, Howaito Sunēku?) :
- White Vine (白蔓ホワイト・バイン, Howaito Bain?) :
- White Launcher (ホワイトランチャー, Howaito Ranchā?) :
