Biography
Narya was a female demigod who was born as the daughter of the goddess Nelvana and a mortal human named Richard Lawrence Easton. Her origins were tied to fifteen years ago when the imprisoned Northern Gods came to sense that their ancient enemies the Great Beasts would be freed from their imprisonment and come to the Earth. Thus, her and her father Hodiak sought to prevent their return by creating a champion. To that end, they briefly manifested before Richard Easton where Nelvanna's form changed to a beautiful young maiden to mate with the human. Once done, she departed and Easton became filled with the terrible knowledge about the Great Beasts leading to him going insane. A year later, the pregnant Nelvanna appeared before the Shaman Michael Twoyoungmen who served as a midwife for the birth of her child. The demigoddess's nature meant that he had to bound her to the land so that she could assume the form of humanity and bind her to that reality. (Alpha Flight v1 #7)
She was then best by dreams of the gods that helped create her where they were displeased over her actions. Snowbird was told by them that she had failed in her duty as she had allowed the last of the seven Great Beasts to still walk the Earth. They then conjured a vision of her foe which was shown to be the form of her comrade Sasquatch. Thus, Narya learnt that Langkowski's power was tied to the Great Beast Tanaraq who had taken possession of his body as a result of his gamma experiments that pierced the mystical barrier that kept her foes away. As time went on, Tanaraq's influence began to grow within Walter's body thus making him a threat to the world with Snowbird looking to stop him. She then made her way to the Alpha Flight training site where she attacked Sasquatch much to the confusion of her comrades who tried to stop her. It was then that Tanaraq claimed possession of Walter's body and turned against his former friends. To stop him, Snowbird shapeshifted into the form of the Sasquatch thus matching Tanaraq's strength where she was ultimately able to stop him by killing his earthly vessel. Thus, Walter's body died but it was believed his soul was still alive which had travelled to the Kingdom of the Beasts with Alpha Flight mounting a rescue attempt. (Alpha Flight v1 #23)
Days ago, the new Guardian Michael Pointer approached Narya about joining the new Omega Flight but she rejected his offer violently. She refused to forgive Pointer for his role as the Collective in destroying Alpha Flight and for disgracing the memory of James Hudson. In fact, she believe that the end of her marriage meant that she was devoted to her singular task of fighting the Great Beasts and departed the scene by turning into a seal where she said she would return if her ancient foes were to bring danger to the world once more. However, she then received a call from her uncle Hodiak who asked for her aid against stopping a great threat to the world. This was because of the Skrulls Secret Invasion that was a religious war where their gods sought to conquer the Earth. To fight this threat, the God Squad was assembled at the suggestion of Athena with several members of the pantheons offering their own champion to the group. (Incredible Hercules v1 #117)
Whilst investigating a supernatural disturbance, Snowbird and Talisman came upon undead creatures that they fought with them banishing the entities. It was then she found the wandering spirit of her biological father Richard Easton who had passed away with his soul having wandering as it was not at peace. Narya then worked with Talisman in sending her Easton's soul to the afterlife in order to finally find peace. (Alpha Flight: True North v1 #1)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Snowbird was a female of Inuit heritage who possessed a striking, ethereal quality. She was a demigoddess with a regal and aloof bearing that hinted at her divine lineage. Her features were marked by pale skin and flowing blonde hair, though her most unsettling attribute was her eyes, which were typically depicted as solid black with small white pupils. She maintained a slender but athletic body shape. Her uniform consisted of a sleek, form-fitting white bodysuit that mirrored the pristine snow of her northern home. This suit was complemented by a distinctive feathered headdress and a flowing cape that often appeared to be made of white fur or feathers. A stylized blue and yellow emblem was prominently displayed on her chest, serving as a symbol of her role within her team. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #120) Adopting a civilian life, she came to assume the name Anne McKenzie. (Alpha Flight v1 #6)
Beyond her physical form, she exhibited a cold, detached professionality that bordered on the clinical. When confronted with the prospect of an escalating conflict, she remained entirely unmoved by emotion, viewing the tactical necessity of an engagement with a chilling, almost otherworldly indifference that separated her from the more hot-headed reactions of her peers. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #120) In her internal disposition, Snowbird possessed a profound spiritual detachment and a sense of divine burden that set her apart from her teammates. She carried herself with a heavy, melancholic awareness of her sacred duty, viewing her existence not as a life to be lived, but as a vessel for the will of the Northern Gods. This was most evident in her interactions with the mortal world, where she remained aloof and somber, seemingly haunted by the ancient prophecies she was born to fulfill. She did not seek camaraderie or personal joy; instead, she operated with a grim, focused obedience to her mystical heritage, often appearing as a tragic figure trapped between the majesty of her godhood and the cold limitations of the earthly plane. This stoic isolation made her appear distant and unreachable, as if her mind were perpetually tuned to the whispers of the arctic winds rather than the concerns of man. (Alpha Flight v1 #1)
Narya was noted for being the daughter of Nelvanna, who was the Inuit goddess of the Northern Light. She looked to birth a champion with a mortal to help fight the Great Beasts. Her biological father was noted for being Richard Lawrence Easton who was an archaeologist that had been chosen to be the father of the champion. (Alpha Flight v1 #7)
In addition, the Shaman Michael Twoyoungmen served as a midwife for thee birth of Narya and helped raised her. During this time, Shaman acted as her foster father and mentor, teaching her to control her emerging shapeshifting abilities and educating her on mortal customs to prepare her for her eventual role as a protector of Canada. (Alpha Flight v1 #7)
Powers and abilities
Narya was noted for being the daughter of an Inuit goddess and a mortal man thus making her a goddess. She was noted for being born to serve as a champion to defend the lands of Canada from the Great Beasts. Due to her nature as a demi-goddess, she matured at an incredibly rapid rate, reaching physical adulthood in roughly six years. She was said to had been bound to the land and tethering her to reality allowing her to assume the form of humanity. (Alpha Flight v1 #7)(Alpha Flight v1 #7)
She was regarded as a transmorph allowing her to assume any shape at will. (Alpha Flight v1 #7) Snowbird was shown to transition into a white arctic owl, utilizing the transformation to gain a tactical aerial advantage and scout the movements of her opponents from above. Shortly thereafter, she shifted her molecular structure once again, manifesting as a massive white timber wolf. In this predatory state, she possessed enhanced speed and ferocity, leaping into physical combat with a primal intensity. Each of these transformations was characterized by a distinct striking white coloration, a visual signature of her divine nature that persisted regardless of the animal shape she inhabited. This display of mystical shapeshifting provided her with a versatile range of physical attributes, blending the predatory instincts of the wild with her own keen human intelligence to serve as a formidable combatant. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #120)
Another ability she had given to her to aid her was the power to compel others to aid her even if they did not do so willingly. Thus, with a simple command, she could use her voice to cause a person to stop in their tracks. (Alpha Flight v1 #24)
She had the power to take on the form and abilities of the Great Beasts such as Tanaraq. (Alpha Flight v1 #23) Another Great Beast form she could take was Neooqtoq, the Ravager who was considered the deadliest of their number that killed both friend or foe alike. (Incredible Hercules v1 #119)
Guardian helped manufacture a civilian identity for Narya where she operated as a records officer for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) stationed in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. (Alpha Flight v1 #6)
