History

The Special Operations Division (Japanese: 大英図書館特殊工作部, daiei-toshokan tokushu-kousakubu) was a special operations group that operated as an extension of the British Library.

The Dominant Genes Preservation Office came to be attacked and destroyed by Dokusensha, the chief rival of the British Library. Several DNA samples were stolen and used to create the I-Jin. However, Dokusensha was unable to use the I-Jin to achieve their own goals to thwart the British Library; the I-Jin, led by Ikkyu, subsequently instigated the Great Man Incident. Unable to use the DNA gathered by the Department and with Mr. Gentleman's impending and unavoidable death, the British Library resorted to their final plan in order to preserve Mr. Gentleman's personality, within seven books, until they could either find or create a suitable body for his rebirth.

After the destruction of the I-Jin, the library was severely damaged by Yomiko Readman when she learns of Joseph Carpenter's plans for resurrecting the British Empire. The resulting destruction nearly destroys Great Britain's political power and paralyzes the economy. Eventually, Joseph Carpenter makes an agreement with Dokusensha. In exchange for giving Dokusensha the Gentleman Books, Dokusensha will give Britain aid for its recovery.

Overview

The seal of the British Library Special Operations Division referred to the organisation as L.L.L.U (Last Literature Defence Line of the United Kingdom).

The slogan of the organisation was, "Peace to the Books of the World, an Iron Hammer to Those Who Would Abuse Them, and Glory and Wisdom to the British Empire!"

One of the divisions of the S.O.D. was the Department of Dominant Gene Conservation, which was also known as the Dominant Genes Preservation Office. conceived when it was discovered the Mr. Gentleman's body was deteriorating. Unable to find ways to heal or regenerate his current body, the British Library established the Department of Dominant Gene Conservation in order to gather the DNA of famous historic figures and use them to create a new suitable body for Mr. Gentleman. Its true purpose was kept hidden from most members of the British Library, save those of the highest authority.

One type of powered operative used by the organisation were papermasters (in Japanese 紙使い|kamitsukai). These were people who had telekinetic control over paper and objects that contain paper. The ability is genetic. Papermasters can also nullify each other's abilities; a stronger papermaster can turn his opponent's paper into his/her own weapon. Skill varies with the person and with varying strength and success.
