History
Spirit Detectives (Japanese: 霊界探偵, Hepburn: Reikai Tantei, lit. "Spirit World Detective") were agents of the spirit world hunting down renegade demons who threaten peace on Earth. Their position was entrusted to them by the reigning king of the Spirit World.
Overview
Normally, the condition to be a Spirit Detective is to either have Psychic abilities awakened or have great potential. This Spirit Detective commonly has the help of a Spirit which works as a liaison and tactical support. Typically, the Spirit Detective handled easy-task missions (defeat D Class demons), but from time to time they have to deal with strong spirits which are C Class and above.
All Spirit Detectives have the ability to fire spirit energy in a blast, that can be channeled from their bodies in a variety of ways.
Members
- Kuroko Sato : Kuroko Sanada was a Japanese woman who first started training as a Spirit Detective while in junior-high school, she was rather obese. A combination of training and a sudden growth spurt helped her lose a great deal of weight, eventually leading to her current appearance. Ten years before the start of the series, she met Shinobu Sensui, her successor, just after she retired to start a family. She remembered him being quiet and respectful, but was suspicious of him being too rigid and suspected he was always in a precarious state of mind.
- Shinobu Sensui : a Japanese male said by Koenma to have been naturally gifted with immense innate spiritual power. Reaching his teens, this prodigious spiritual power, along with his black and white view of the world and desire for justice made him a perfect candidate to become a Spirit Detective. Throughout his career as Spirit Detective, Sensui performed his duties in an exemplary fashion, killing any and all demons he was tasked to hunt down and breaking up numerous other-worldly criminal enterprises.
- Yusuke Urameshi : a 14 years old Japanese male who saved a child from a car only to die from the incident. As a ghost, Yusuke is greeted by an atypical version of the Grim Reaper; a bubbly, cheerful young woman named Botan. She informs Yusuke that no one in Spirit World had expected him to die, risking his life to save the little boy. The boy would've survived; Thus, Yusuke's interference was unnecessary and only resulted in the kid having a minor scratch. They have no place for him in the afterlife because of his abrupt death. The Spirit World is also amazed at how Yusuke, known for his bad attitude, could save a boy, and for these reasons, he was given the chance to live again. Botan explains that Yusuke can return to life, but he initially declines.
