Starseeds are living organisms that feature in Known Space.

Background

The Starseeds that were also known as sailseeds were life forms that populated in the universe. Not much was known abot them except that they apparently migrated from the galactic center to the rim in order to eject their eggs whereupon they travelled back towards the core. On some occasions, these eggs were ejected towards other galaxies though most were left to hatch in order to migrate themselves to the core. In reality, starseeds were packages of micro-organisms that were designed to seed new planets with life. On one such occasion, the starseeds created the Thrint who nearly destroyed all life in the galaxy several billion years ago. The Outsiders were known to folloy starseeds for reasons that they only knew though in reality this was because it produced new customers for themselves. However, they were reluctant to reveal this truth as they were ashamed as this action had led to the rise of the Thrint. The Pierson's Puppeteers claimed to had developed a technology known as starseed lure that attracted the organisms to specific solar systems. Through the lure, they were known to had influenced the course of Human/Kzin war by causing a Outsider ship to visit a Human colony world whereupon they allowed mankind to purchase hyperdrive technology. This development allowed Humanity to decimate the Kzinti during the subsequent wars.

Background

They were large approximately one mile in diameter that travelled through interstellar space. These normally spherical organisms moved through space but when they changed direction they unfolded themselves into a large squarish solar sail with four corners that were connected via strands to a small knob. Their internal organs were located in cross-shaped swellings in the sail. Their true nature as packages of micro-organisms allowed them to produce and bring about the emergence of new life.
