History

Origin

Stratans were a race of beings that were native to the planet Earth and existed deep underground in a region they called Strata. (Terra v1 #3) Their origins were actually traced to thousands of years ago when a being known as the Astronaut God who was from a race that predated time came to fall to Earth's surface. The entity had long been dead and its corpse had long drifted the universe to the point that entire civilizations had grown as well as died on the god's surface. Its arrival to the planet came at a time before the emergence of mankind and when Dinosaurs roamed the surface with the Astronaut God's body crashing onto the surface where its great mass caused is body to slowly sink beneath the surface. The protective suit encasing the being allowed its body to survive where its body began to develop life that was composed of both its genetic structure and that of the natives of Earth. In time, the Stratans that formed developed their own society and civilization with them using the computer system to learn of the Astronaut God along with the recording of its final moments. (Terra v1 #4)

Later on, the Ultra-Humanite Gerard Shugel came to swap his brain with that of Terra. This allowed him to use her body were first he defeated Power Girl as he wanted his revenge against the hero. He then looked to use Terra's power to terrorise the world but Power Girl arrived to defeat him. However, she did not have the means to restore Atlee to her body but she stated that her home in Strata had the technology. This saw Power Girl take both bodies to the underground civilisation where they were able to restore Terra to her own body. (Power Girl v2 #11)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Years ago, Atlee clashed with a Chida Monster and believed she had vanquished her foe but they actually survived this encounter. (Starfire v2 #4)

Environmental contamination from the surface began to affect the life of the underground dwelling Stratans. To prevent further harm, they dispatched Atlee to the surface where she was to assimilate amongst humanity and help stop further damage to the world. (Starfire v2 #4)

Banished King Neala-Tok later staged an attempted coup where he looked to conquer Strata and bring it under his rule. (Starfire v2 #10)

Overview

Though native to Earth, the origins of the Stratans was not entirely terrestrial and their evolution was not the same as mankind. They possessed some of the same genetic components in humans but there were additional genetic coding that made their race unique on the planet. (Terra v1 #4)

The people of Strata were said to possess many different ways of communicating. (Power Girl v2 #12)

Among the Stratan species included:

  • Chida Monsters :
  • Mantodeans :

The Stratans were said to be a peaceful people who had no weapons. Instead, they had superpowered Protectors who defended their civilisation from threats. They were charged with enforcing the laws of Strata where it was a crime to murder one of its citizens. Protectors were empowered to sentence offenders to death if they had killed a Stratans. (Starfire v2 #10)

It was mentioned that they were led by a Council of Elders. (Starfire v2 #4)

A substance native to their subterranean home was a metal called Quixium. It altered the genetics of all Stratans and even provided a rare few with superpowers. (Terra v1 #3)

The Stratans had developed advanced science yet maintained a special connection to nature. (Starfire v2 #4)

They were responsible for creating Semi-Organic Neural Interface Clothing (SONIC) that was used when going into their spas where it resembled swimming clothes. It worked in conjunction with emofluid where it helped in achieving the highest state of consciousness. The person wearing the SONIC was said to feel like they were getting a molecular massage whilst the emofluid channelled the person's emotions that manifested on the clothing. (Power Girl v2 #12)

It was noted that Strata had cloning technology allowing them to bring a person back even if their body was destroyed. (Power Girl v2 #11)

At these particular locations, Stratans stationed a gatekeeper who was tasked with controlling who could travel into Strata. (Starfire v2 #9)
