Sunstorm was introduced as a long-lost Seeker who emerged from a hidden stasis chamber deep within Cybertron after being reactivated by a massive energy surge. He immediately displayed a volatile and unstable mental state, firmly believing that he had been chosen by a higher power as a divine instrument of purification. He took to the skies with a terrifying, shimmering golden aura, incinerating everything in his path with uncontrolled fusion energy that leaked from his chassis. He encountered a group of both Autobots and Decepticons and, rather than declaring an allegiance, he attacked both factions with equal fervor, viewing them all as 'heretics' who had defiled his home planet. Throughout his initial rampage, he exhibited god-like power levels that dwarfed those of standard Transformers, easily shrugging off high-yield weapons fire and mocking the 'primitive' technology of his peers. His actions quickly escalated from a localized skirmish to a global threat, as he began seeking out the Matrix of Leadership, convinced that its power was his birthright and the final key needed to complete his divine mission of cleansing the universe in a baptism of solar fire.

In the subsequent stage of his crusade, the golden Seeker intercepted and abducted the Autobot scientist Jetfire, spiriting him away to a remote, desolate region of the Alaskan wilderness. He held the larger flyer captive, not out of a desire for traditional interrogation, but because he sensed a kindred scientific spirit who might be capable of comprehending the "divine" nature of his internal fusion reactor. Throughout their time together, he subjected Jetfire to a series of religious rants, claiming that he was a literal god born of the Matrix's energy and that his radioactive leakage was actually a holy gift meant to burn away the unworthy. He attempted to forcefully recruit the Autobot into his cause, viewing Jetfire’s own advanced aerial capabilities as a sign that they were both destined to rule over the "lesser" Cybertronians. When his peaceful overtures were met with scientific skepticism, his temper flared with the heat of a star, and he nearly incinerated his prisoner in a fit of righteous fury before the arrival of the Autobots and Decepticons turned the encounter into a three-way battlefield.
