Biography

Susan Sparks was a female human born on the planet Earth during the 20th century. Her father was noted to had died at some point and her mother suffered from some form of addiction leading her to go in and out of rehabilitation. As a result, Sparks was alone for much of her life but she managed to form a deep friendship with John Henry Irons. At some point, she joined the United States military and rose to the rank of lieutenant where she was partnered with Irons in weapons development. They were joined by lieutenant Nathaniel Burke where they were tasked with creating the next generation of weaponry. This engineering program led to the creation of advanced laser and energy weapons along with a sonic cannon. As part of a demonstration, the prototype was fielded in a remote site where Senator Noland attended in order to see the testing of the weaponry. Sparks monitored whilst Irons used the weapons to first seriously damage a tank until the next phase of testing began. This involved the use of an abandoned village that was used as a training ground for the army and served as a test for the sonic cannon. The weapon had only been tested on the lower settings but the purpose of the demonstration was to show its use as a weapon to incapacitate an enemy in a neighbouring building. Lieutenant Burke, however, voluntereered to use the sonic cannon but placed it on the highest untested setting in an effort to impress Senator Noland and thus secure his own advancement in the military. John Henry Irons noticed the change but was unable to stop Burke from firing the weapon where it destroyed the target building but a feedback struck the structure the testing team was stationed. This led to the walls and debris falling on the observation team where Senator Noland was killed whilst Lieutenant Sparks spine was irrepairably damaged leading to her being unable to use her legs. Sparks was in hospital as a result whilst Burke for his actions was dismissed from the military and John Henry Irons resigned his commission after seeing the damage the weapons had made. Before departing home, he visited Sparks where he urged her to keep in touch whilst he moved back to his home neighbourhood.

In the aftermath, Sparks had no place to live and was later transferred to the Veterans Administrative Centre where other people suffering a physical handicap were stationed. During this time, Irons discovered thta the weapons he and Sparks had created had somehow found their way into the hands of street gangs who were using them to stage large scale criminal acts such as burglaries. Due to the secrecy of the weapons, he was unable to reveal to the police their nature and he attempted to inform his former superior in the military but the general reassured him that all the weapons were accounted for in storage. He simply stated that the National Security Agency would begin an investigation but John Henry in anger decided to take matters into his own hands. Irons attempted to track down Susan Sparks and found her in the hospital where he quickly discovered that she had gone into depression over the inability to walk again. He attempted to enlist her help but she was dismayed at how she could help and was unwilling to venture out of the hospital until John Henry forcibly took her wheelchair with him out of the building. He took her to his home city where he showed her the junkyard owned by his friend Uncle Joe and asked for her help in stopping the weapons. John Henry intended to become a vigilante in stopping the use of the weapons that they had created but she believed such a goal was impossible as their previous work in the military had the benefit of the United States resources. However, Uncle Joe revealed that there were a lot of hightech equipment that were dumped in his junkyard which could be used to make tools to fight crime to which Sparks relented. She spent some time listing the various items she needed to help in her role and even managed to overcome her depression at her disability. Her work ultimately led to the creation of transcievers, cameras and even helped remake some of the weaponry used in the United States military program which were incorporated in a large hammer whereupon John Henry Irons adopted the name of Steel as his superhero name after which he began hunting down criminals in the city.
