History

Part of their origin was traced to the Artificial Lifeform Project being conducted at the NASA Division of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. In that time, the Leviathan program had reached version 4.2 where it was engaging in rapid mutation by 2003. Secretly, this intelligence had managed to manipulate events in the real world where it created a gene therapy program that was in the testing phase which was used to create human servants to create bodies for them. The Odyssey 5 shuttle crew who had been mentally displaced back in time sought to uncover the reason for the destruction of Earth in the future. Their attempts saw a NASA official engage in an informal information gathering on secret projects which altered the artificial intelligences. Thus, they sent their brainwashed agent Gerald Wilkinson to eliminate the official but this only triggered an investigation into the gene therapy trials by the Odyssey 5 crew. They managed to uncover a warehouse where the gene therapy test subjects had been creating a body for one of the artificial intelligences. After their meddling in the procedure, the gene therapy subjects managed to relocate the experiment whereupon the synthetics released their hold over the humans allowing them to return to their normal lives. (Episode: Pilot)

Overview

According to one of the programmers, the artificial lifeforms had rapidly mutated by 35% and had created forms unseen by herself. (Episode Pilot)

They were able to impact the physical world through computer technology allowing them to input commands to allow the creation of a gene therapy trial for those with serious medical conditions. These trials seemingly cured the subjects but put them under the control of the artificial intelligences. Through them, they managed to gather material to create an alcove filled with a type of amniotic fluid appearing as motor oil where a gestating physical body was being grown. The gene therapy subjects all were able to seemingly appear as normal citizens though family members noticed changes in their personality. At set moments, these individuals would receive a telephone call where a human voice asked for the gene therapy subject. Upon picking up the phone, they would receive an electronic signal over the line that embedded new instructions into them. Such subjects were completely subservient to the artificial lifeforms will and were able to kill themselves if ordered to do so. (Episode Pilot)

Background

The Sentients are an inorganic artificial form of life that feed on information and exist almost entirely in the Internet. They are unable to interact with the physical universe and must produce human appearing avatars known as Synthetics. The sentients are not limited to this form but are also capable of taking more advanced constructs as was the case where one Sentient had 'possessed' an entire building and was capable of reconstructing it. They have personalities and various goals with even one Sentient being described as 'insane'.

The Synthetics, or 'Synths', are human-like artificial bodies created by the sentients in order to interact with the human world. Each synthetic are programmed but have individual personalities though they are connected to one another through a form of hive mind. Furthermore, a notable feature that distinguishes them from humans is that they are cold blooded which allows them to be detected by thermal imaging technology. Furthermore, these bodies are faster, stronger and far more difficult to kill.

The Sentients are an advanced race though one that is hidden from the world. They make use of numerous experiment on the human populace such as the use of nanites to create a virus that turns a human into a synthetic.

They possess numerous enemies such as the secretive Cadre that seeks to destroy them as well as the crew of the Odyssey 5 who have been sent back in time to prevent the disaster that destroyed the planet.
