Biography

Turles (Japanese: ターレス, Hepburn: Tāresu) was a pure-blooded Saiyan, a survivor of the destruction of Planet Vegeta. He looked very similar to Goku, and it is possible they are twin brothers or otherwise related somehow. With a small group of followers (Amon, Daizu, Kakao, and Rezun and Rakasae).

At some point he learned of the Fruit of the Tree of Might, a holy fruit from the Tree of Might that requires the energy of a whole planet to produce and is normally reserved for divine beings and gods which he somehow acquired during his travels, though how this occurred has yet to be explained. Regardless of how he acquired it, he was able to use extract from the Tree of Might to revive two members of the extremely intelligent Beenz people from fossils, the brothers Rasin and Lakasei. The two brothers then built Turles' spaceship and the rest of their ordinance. Wanting to do as he pleased in the universe, Turles traveled around destroying planets, eating the fruits of the Tree of Might and gaining more allies. Turles hoped to one day acquire enough power using the fruit to challenge the Galactic Emperor and his former boss, Frieza for control of the universe. The medley of ragtag thugs he gathered are called the Turles Crusher Corps who use the Seeds of Might to grow the Tree of Might in order to consume its fruit, as well as destroying any planets they find unsuitable for growing it.

He came to Earth to plant the Tree of Might. In a matter of hours the tree grew at a rapid pace, until it reached hundreds of miles across the Earth, destroying all cities and signs of life in its path. Goku and the Z Warriors flew to the scene and battled Turles' followers, but all of them were overpowered except for Goku.

Turles did not initially participate in battle. He only appeared after Gohan had singlehandedly defeated Rezun. Impressed by the boy's strength, Turles realized that Gohan was a Saiyan. He promptly kidnapped Gohan and, noting his tail, created a ball of artificial moonlight (similar to Vegeta). He gleefully turned the boy's eyes to look at the moonlight, while taking care to look away himself, at which Gohan transformed into an Oozaru and began wreaking havoc. Piccolo challenged Turles, but the far stronger Saiyan simply knocked him aside. Although he had to expend a little bit more effort, Turles also managed to defeat Goku by himself as well.

One the Tree of Might grew to its fullest, Turles consumed not one but several pieces of the tree's super-charged fruit, boosting his strength, speed and stamina tremendously. Intending to finish off Goku, Turles met him for a final showdown within the hollow of the colossal tree. Acting quickly, Goku launched a Spirit Bomb (Genki-Dama) at Turles, which had been created from all the energy stored in the fruit. Both Turles and the tree were destroyed by the enormous ball of the Earth's energy.

A fake Turles was created by Dr. Raichi to battle Goku and company during his attempt to wipe out all life on Earth with Destron Gas; he was quickly destroyed.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Turles is shown to be a merciless, prideful and confident individual. His cruel treatment of Gohan proves that he cares little to nothing for others, shown again when he casually dismisses the deaths of his loyal subordinates at the hands of Goku. As such, his lack of empathy was such that, when Goku accuses Turles of not knowing the difference between good and evil, Turles reveals he has a firm grasp on what good and evil is, yet he doesn't even care about it. As with many other villains before and after him, his main objective is to conquer the universe, though he plans on doing so by using his Tree of Might, even if it means killing billions of innocent people in the process. He also seems to find pleasure in seeing others suffer, as to how he laughed when Goku was being attacked by his own son. According to Old Kai in Xenoverse 2, Turles' heart is essentially a "ball of pure evil" which makes sense as he is essentially Goku's polar opposite as Goku is known to possess a heart that is pure good. It also makes sense as Turles understands the difference between good and evil yet chooses to do evil.

Turles has a warped interest in having Gohan join him as he recognizes the boy's true potential. He even seems to ignore Gohan's half Saiyan status, though he may be unaware the boy's mother is not a Saiyan given that Gohan is the only hybrid born with a tail which may cause Turles to mistakenly believe he is pure Saiyan, or Gohan's great potential makes him simply overlook this fact. However, he does not care at all for Gohan's wellbeing and presumably only wishes to use his power for his own benefit given his cruel treatment of the boy and willingness to kill him if need be. Additionally he is shown to potentially view any Saiyan or powerful warrior he encounters as a potential underling or partner.

Powers and abilities

As a Saiyan, Turles was born with a natural talent of ki and channelling into to achieve a number of effects.

Among the techniques known by him included:

  • Kill Driver (キルドライバー Kiru Doraibā) :
  • Meteor Break (メテオバースト Meteo Bāsuto) :
  • Calamity Blaster (カラミティブラスター Karamiti Burasutā) :

It was his repeated consumption of the Fruit of the Tree of Might puts his base power level much higher than that of Saiyans of that tier. He is able to effortlessly beat Piccolo, whose power level was at 18,000, even blocking his Special Beam Cannon with the palm of his hand and saying it only hurt a bit. Turles also referred to Great Ape Gohan as not being a match for him, and Goku feared that Turles' Kill Driver would kill Great Ape Gohan. When Turles battles Goku, he is unnerved as he calculates Goku's power level at 30,000 and notes that it is skyrocketing compared to what it previously was. Goku initially has an edge; driving him back, though Turles is able to fend off Goku's assault.

Notes

  • Turles was created by Keiji Terui and Kazuhisa Takenouchi where he featured in the setting of the non-canon film Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might.

In other media

Television

  • In Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Turles appeared in the setting of the non-canon anime television series. Turles' fate was changed thanks to Fu, who collected him from the point in time where he was supposed to die - just before he was killed by the Spirit Bomb - so that Turles could work for him in Age 780. In anticipation for his revenge against Goku, Turles ate many fruits of the Tree of Might - becoming far more powerful - and was powered up by Fu. He and Bojack get into a scuffle when Bojack is provoked by Turles's Saiyan heritage, before Fu stops them from fighting. He catches their attention by explaining how he saved them from their past defeats at Goku and his allies' hands. At this, Turles declares he will not lose again. Not long after, Turles arrives alongside Bojack to confront Goku, Vegeta, Xeno Pan and Xeno Trunks. After a mock greeting as Goku recognizes him, he manages to get Goku into a chokehold, leaving Bojack an opportunity to attack out of revenge for the space pirate's death at his son Gohan's hands. Turles and Bojack then proceed to power up with malicious auras similar to Cumber's and fight Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta respectively, Turles boasting about the power of the Universe Tree's fruit. When Fu catches the Saiyan duo's attention, Turles and Bojack blast them from behind for lowering their guard. Turles and Goku continue to battle until Dogidogi, under the command of Fu, flaps his wings to freeze Goku and the others in place allowing Fu to take the opportunity to capture Tokitoki and escape through a space-time distortion. Almost immediately afterwards, unsatisfied with Fu's interference, Turles and Bojack make an exit in similar fashion. After Cumber takes down Vegeta, he is suddenly ambushed by Turles. Turles tells Cumber that he is the strongest Saiyan thanks to continuously eating the Fruits of the Tree of Might and thereby gaining endless evil power from it. Demanding to see his true power, Cumber attacks Turles. When Vegeta gets back to his feet, Turles hits him again into a wall. Before continuing his fight with Cumber, Turles attempts to corrupt Vegeta using his Evil Aura. However, Vegeta manages to overcome the corruption, making that power his own. Vegeta easily takes down Turles telling him to train and come back if he has any Saiyan pride left in him. Turles replies that if it means that he will become a low-class Saiyan again, then he is fine with that.
