Ted Hughes was a safety inspector for the Llanfairfach Colliery. Whilst down in the mine alone, he contracted the "green death." He fled the mine in a panic. Although he sounded the alarm to summon help, by the time the other miners reached him, Hughes had already succumbed to the disease and was dead.

• Exactly how Hughes contracted the green death is unknown. The novelization has a scene (not featured in the serial) where he finds the toxic waste and touches it, thus becoming infected; however the actual serial depicts Hughes running frantically through the mine, looking back repeatedly, as though being pursued, suggesting he'd encountered the giant maggots.
