History

The ancient history of the Joining was largely unknown though according to J'onn J'ohnz, the were a synthetic race developed by an older civilization. However, in time, their creations turned on them and destroyed their species after which they incorporated what technology they could before going into the stars. Since that time, they have infiltrated countless worlds and invaded them whereupon they took the technology of that species which they incorporated into their own bodies thus evolving as time went by. These actions left nothing but planetary husks left behind and the Joining went about ravaging half the galaxy as part of their own programming. It was known that no planet had ever survived an invasion from the Joining.

At some point, they began a process of infiltrating Earth where they started secretly moving equipment through the native corporations such as Wayne Enterprises. As part of this process, they kidnapped Lucius Fox and replaced him with a robotic duplicate in order to fool Bruce Wayne. It was only the intervention of the Martian Manhunter was their plan revealed leading to the Batman attempting to stop the Joining's invasion of the planet. (S4: The Joining)

In order to better combat the Metahumans of Earth, the Joining formed an alliance with Doctor Hugo Strange. Using the Human's mind, the Joining were able to defeat each member of the Justice League though they neglected to deal with the non-super powered heroes such as Green Arrow and Batman. They were defeated but the strike was only a first step during their invasion attempts of the planet which was being achieved through a mothership. However, the Martian Manhunter was able to use a mental link with Hugo Strange to learn of the Joining's deactivation codes which ended the threat posed by the species.

Overview

In appearance, the Joining were a completely synthetic race who are linked to one another in a complex hive mind. Their numbers were noted as being as large as a city with all of them focused on their single minded goal. They are capable of incorporating other species technology into their own in order to enhance themselves as part of their own evolutionary process. Their hive mind nature means that the entire race worked as one gigantic machine with the knowledge of one member being shared with the rest.

The machine qualities of the Joining means that they do not have a standard form but a number of different ones based on machines. These can range from infiltrator models to insectile looking soldiers. This means that ultimately whilst they have many bodies, they have only a single powerful mind that directs them. The goal of this intelligence was the simple harvesting of a planets technology and destroying what was left behind. The greatest strengths of the Joining is their linked nature which allows them to be both coordinated and strong.

Joining technology makes use of bonded metallic alloys which creates metals from different sources and unites them in order to create a super alloy stronger than most other ones.

The Joining are capable of duplicating the appearance of other races whih allows them to infiltrate their societies. When damaged, the unit is capable of revealing a more insectoid robot form to attack its enemies.

While the hive mind served as a potent source of communication, certain codes can be distributed through the link allowing the entire race to be infected which is capable of deactivating them.

Notes

  • The concept of a machine intelligence that ravages worlds in search for data after which it destroys them is similar to the DC Animated version of Brainiac.
  • Similarly, the idea of an alien race that invades through infiltration is similar to the Imperium from the Justice League cartoon of the DC Animated universe.
